The case does need more light.....can't see any of my goodies through the case window. I have never used cathode tubes but I may have to.....not much selection for LED-based fans of that size!
Of my 4 drives, one is strictly for video capture, one to receive/store the processed video, and one for backup. I also backup to an external hard drive (typically disconnected for safety) and backup to DVD-R.
Unless you want to pay HiDef prices, MiniDV can't be beat. A lot of it comes down to number and size of CCD's when you are talking about quality. I have a Panasonic GS500 and it is excellent.
I did some quick benchmarking via a stopwatch and DVD Shrink (w/ deep analysis) dropped several minutes off of a full size DVD. I never benchmark my games so I can't offer any info there.
