Unexpected hardware switch w/Win 7

Boot into SAFE mode and let it install drivers. The only thing I would uninstall is the GPU driver, but you are keeping that, so you should be fine with just letting Windows install everything automatically. Enjoy the new system!

Thanks. I actually have a spare AMD X2 series CPU, so I will try and swap it out if nothing else works.

Windows 8 system locks up

Nothing stands out in the Event Viewer. (but I'll give it a more thorough check when I get home) There is no obvious cause to the freezing. Once it happened while I was browsing files, once while resizing a window. Once wile saving a file. It just seems completely random.

Windows 8 system locks up

Recently installed Win8 on my home server. It has an AMD X2 CPU, 2GB Ram, nVidia 8400GS, SATA 1 PCI card, and a bunch of disks. I've done my best to update all drivers/firmware. For some reason, the system locks up every few days. It seems that it always happens WHILE I AM ACTIVELY USING IT...

What is the best Start menu app or trick for Windows 8

If you hit the Win key and just start typing, Windows will begin searching for the app/file you are looking for. This is the exact same process from Win7 (and arguably how EVERYONE should have been using the start menu) but the UI has changed. Teach everyone this process now while they are...

NAS drives vs?

If you are going to be using the NAS heavily, I'd steer towards a NAS labeled drive. If you are causally using it for file storage, then just get a cheap drive with a decent warranty. (though the WD RED drives have the longest warranty of WD's offerings)

WD Green, Red, or AV-GP?

I've had about 4 WD Green drives and 3 of them have died within 18 months. WD is solid for RMA, though, and they always send back a drive that is either better/larger capacity. So I'm not complaining. Last Green drive I RMA'd was replaced with a Red drive. =)

Terrible NAS performance

I second beginner99's post. What you really want is an SSD cache for the NAS, then things will fly!
