What's the problem here?

Here's an update. Any more thoughts are appreciated. The speakers are brand new and in fact advertised as "shielded for use near video monitors." I previously had moved them away from the monitor and there was no change. I bought a new video card, an ATI 9600xt, and installed it, booted...

What's the problem here?

No, didn't move the monitor. Just set the laptop on the desktop case and switched the plug from the desktop to the notebook. It's a good thought though; I got some new speakers for christmas (Altec Lansing VS2120) around the time this problem arose. But I keep thinking that if it's a problem...

no, I figured if the monitor worked with a different computer then the problem was with the video card.

I have a gGeForce GF Fx5600 I bought back in Aug. 2003. A few weeks ago I started seeing some -- not sure how to describe it -- light, shadowy, concentric circles on the four corners of the monitor extending toward the middle. Almost looks like the rings of saturn. It's not the monitor...

Recommend Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 gb, 7200 rpm, Ultra Dma/66?

You can buy a Maxtor 120 gigabyte 7200 rpm ata/133 hard drive for about $59 after rebate right now, if you live near a compusa, for example. Ata/133 is backward compatable with ata/66, so you won't have a problem there. You should seriously consider getting the extra 80 gb for an extra $10.

What brand/grade DVD media is your favorite for movie backups?

I find Ritek to be the best too. I always buy from rima.com because of low prices, fast shipping, and no hassles. I buy the 25 Ritek dvd spindles.

Stability problems - I can't figure it out!

Probably way to obvious, but double check closely to see that the heatsink is properly mounted on the cpu. Sometimes, even with experienced users, the heatsink catches on the lip of the bracket and you don't get full connection. The artic silver instructions webpage shows how this happens...
