Thank you for your answer, however I should've asked this on an electronics board tbh. The dock fitted in a 5.25" bay. On the left-hand side of the PCB you can see the SATA connector where you plug in from mobo and power from PSU. There is no AC/DC conversion. The fet isn't there to step down...

But what were your cores at? If you were seeing 100% or close to it, then sure. But it could conceivably be another bottleneck, like memory bandwidth.

Why are you getting K series processors? OC'ing would net you a greater improvement in performance for less money. Not that it will make much difference, of course. You're going to be GPU bound well before you're CPU bound at 60Hz. Skyrim with a 3570K and a 780 averages 145fps.

PCI-E SATA3 Card

That's about as good as you'll get for PCIe 2.0 x1. Syba/IO Crest have a card that's phyiscally x2 and uses the Marvel 9230 controller that supports x2, so that should achieve full SATA 6.0Gb/s throughput.

Their relationship is dependent on transfer size, but all things being equal, they are interchangeable. Saying an SSD shines in IOPS but not throughput, makes the assumption that when you say IOPS you mean small transfer sizes, and when you say throughput you mean large transfer sizes. Yet...

GTX 690 vs GTX Titan

I had a look at the frame latency charts at PCPer, and I'm not sure how you've arrived at this conclusion. Average frame rates are better of course, but frame latency is worse on the 690. Not by a terrible amount, but there are clearly more spikes and greater bandwidth, which is in keeping with...

Need a decent USB stick

I use the Sandisk Cruzer Extreme. At the time it was the cheapest drive with good 4k speeds (~10MB/s on USB 3.0).

Make USB flash drive Read Only

Do the sewing machines not see drives attached through a hub? If they can only see separate partitions, and they ignore read only attributes, your only option as I see is to program it at the firmware/hardware level, say with an AVR (which is non-trivial :)).
