I'm not familiar with NEC laptops but like Dell laptops you can enable and disable devices in the BIOS. If you disable it in the BIOS your OS won't detect it.
I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB HDD, how do I know if it is a 2MB or 8MB. I found it at work and it was just sitting there.
The model marking is 6Y160L0060414, I thought the 8MB was only in the SATA drives but I see ATA/133 with them also.

Not to thread crap or anything but you can get the same size memory card at Crucial for $18.99 and free 2nd FedEx shipping. For me 32MB isn't going to cut it.
