Well, I agree that with massive increases on military spending, huge expenditures on Iraq, civil liberty violations and so on they can hardly claim the "small government" label in a total sense, its a huge mistake to somehow conclude from that that they were solely in favor of "big government"...

Basically yeah, that's been their game plan. The only thing I would add to that list (which you partially cover already) is that one of their recurring tactics has been to claim there is a "liberal media" and "liberal universities" - despite the fact that the media's bias is far more corporate...
