Total cost is north of $30B and it's taken 17 years and one primary contractor bankruptcy to get them going. It's a massive debacle that no other US utility is interested in going through.

Utilities are investing in renewables and batteries because it's gotten cheap and is getting cheaper and can be brought online in a fraction of the time.
Are you saying that the dearth of nuclear power is the result of capitalism?

Seems to be inline with the need for the subsidies described in the post above. Even existing nuke plants need handouts.

FYI. I’ve personally helped keep 2-7 guys alive on nothing but solar/battery for over 2 decades.

Noted however that you are calling for more tax subsidies for oil/gas.
I’m calling for less subsidies across the board. Let the market drive energy prices and take your damn thumbs off the scales. Stop blocking permits for bullshit.

Capitalism has resoundingly rejected nuclear power. Sounds like you're okay with this.

Same way people think Obama murdered coal power when it was really cheap natural gas from fracking who held the knife.

Pretty sure nuclear power was rejected in large part due to regulatory hurdles. Also, capitalism does not require carbon emitting power sources to pay for their negative externalities, which is problematic.

Nuclear power is good - we should make lots more of it.

Be prepared to subsidize it. Capitalists ain't taking on the expense/liability by themselves.

Nope. Largest battery in the US produces 1,400mwh of power and cost $550 million. The new nukes mentioned above cost $30 billion but produce 17,200,000 mwh of power. Battery can’t touch nuclear. Not by a long shot.

We need more prime movers and less sunshine and unicorn farts powering our grid. Stop believing the propaganda the green lobby and the media is feeding you.

Sources:

Battery prices (and Wind and Solar) are continuing to drop as production scales up.

Nuclear prices and time to construct unfortunately continues to increase.

Pretty soon you'll be talking about the new right wing strategy of instead of burning fossil fuels we should burn migrants since we have an endless supply coming in!

sheewwwww. don’t give the fox cock sucker any actual statistics, logic, reason, and modern economic and cultural realities. You may blow his Fox fever dream of nuclear plants on every corner with children working all the controls

The guy that lives in Texas, once home to Enron, is calling for a free market solution, AND he works in the energy industry? Lol!!! Either you are a grade A troll or you are fucking retarded and have the memory of a goldfish!

Your numbers are bullshit. Your own source has the third reactor at 1100 MW for $14 billion and the fourth reactor isn’t even online yet for the next $16 billion. Compare that to 1400 MW for $550 million and it’s starting to look like a serious ripoff. Armed with this updated information I’m sure you will now advocate for battery storage as a cheap and efficient energy solution.

Furthermore, you work in energy and give your units of “power” in MWh? Starting to look like you aren’t thinking about this carefully or don’t know your physics.

With global warming causing hotter summers wouldn’t even have to store the nuclear waste. It would blend in with the background radiation from the sun. 😎

Bro, you don’t need a whole home generator with automatic transfer capability. A little 5,000 watt kicker with a transfer switch would run your furnace and fridge just fine. Besides global warming is fixing that as we speak if the climate change scientists are accurate. Milder winters, hotter summers. Frozen gas regulator stations and injection plants will cease to be a problem.
After spending 4 hours in 20 degree temps replacing the carburetor on my 5kw generator I decided to go with something more reliable. A 5kw won’t do shit to run HVAC when the power is out for 2 weeks in August after a hurricane and it’s 100F either.

I’ll be adding solar in another 5-7 years once my roof needs to be replaced so I’m not completely dependent on NG still flowing.

Thinking that there won’t be cold winters anymore is a common idea among those who are ignorant of what climate change does. The Arctic will always be colder than lower latitudes and the extra energy from climate change will mean it’s easier to move that mass of cold air farther south in the winters. So I’m expecting warmer winters with significant cold snaps. I’m also expecting physically larger potentially more destructive hurricanes thanks to that extra energy.

So you’ve spent $10k on a generator. It’ll be another $20k on solar panels. And you’ll still be connected to the grid. Ok.

What’s the price per kWh where you’re at?

Cool, so do we pull the $1 Trillion in direct global fossil fuel subsidies or the $7T that includes indirect subsidies?

All of it. And stop being disingenuous by posting half the equation with numbers that are projections from 2019 onward. Here’s the full picture for energy generation which is what we’re discussing.

Front group for fossil fuel industry started by the Koch brothers ... check!

Seriously sounds like one of those guys telling you to always vote Republican once you start working for Wall Street.. because the low taxes make your supposed bonuses bigger.. /rolleyes

And you enslave yourself for a whole year and are rewarded with.. an extra $600! LOL

Then you go.. that wasn't even 1 paycheck worth of bonus..
