They measure weak magnetic fields of the Earth. Nearby metal pieces and/or electromagnetic fields significantly impact the reading. What do cell phones have? Nearby metal pieces and electromagnetic fields.
Wouldn't it already be calibrated for that?

They were calibrated. But the calibration values drift with temperature (which changes frequently) and nearby electromagnetic signals (which changes frequently) and nearby metal interference (which probably changes unless you never move your position). I don't know a whole lot about them, so I assume they also are slightly impacted by voltage (which could change if the cell phone battery is full or low).

To address these changes, the signals go through a Kalman Filter. This is a method that continuously updates calibration values based on measurements over time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalman_filter If the cell phone (or car, or anything else with a digital compass) is stationary for too long, the Kalman Filter doesn't have recent data at any extremes to self-calibrate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalman_filter
an algorithm that uses a series of measurements observed over time, including statistical noise and other inaccuracies, and produces estimates of unknown variables that tend to be more accurate than those based on a single measurement alone
Remember, we are measuring extremely weak and noisy signals. Any sort of filtering will help that, but only if it has a good filter. In the case of cell phones, they use recent data over the last few minutes to calibrate the filter. The filter needs to know in the current environment (temperature, other electromagnetic signals, etc) how the three axis signals behave as the cell phone is rotated in 3 dimensions. The algorithm need to know how does the real signal (Earth's magnetic field) look like when you are standing next to a running microwave or a giant iron railing or in an Artic wind.

I'm skeptical that someone who can't pick their own compass could then use said compass to take over the world, but I'll keep my eye on you. Just in case 👀

I really just want a compass I could put on my wrist that functions properly, could you or someone recommend something?

Well, that's sort why I was asking what you plan to use it for.
I mean, no, I can't recommend something, but knowing the purpose a person intends to use an item for can be helpful in guiding them to the appropriate purchase. I just use GPS maps on my phone and my shrewd observational skills to figure out if I'm going the appropriate direction.

I don't think you can put that on your wrist.
Impact driver and screws. Use stainless screws.

If you just want a toy compass, just go to the dollar store. Or install a free app.

I was thinking about compasses the other day when I went on my property to start scoping out where I want to build and thought of this thread lol.

Got the compass app and the physical compass that @lxskllr posted. My GIS app doesn't show any directional data which is kinda annoying so having a physical compass while I have the app up will make things easier to map out areas and start marking trees. The app will help too but will just require switching back and forth, but I can at least use it to face north then go back to the GIS app.

I need to go back at some point since I was with a friend and it was kind of distracting. Easier to just go alone so I can focus more on what I'm doing. The physical compass is also a good backup in case my phone dies for whatever reason while I'm far in the bush. At least I could use it to get back to the road. Of course I could also use the sun for that if it's out.

Read the read.me of that app carefully. I think there's a way you can calibrate a digital map you have by going to known points and picking them on your map. With two known points, you should be able to get anywhere else on your property. That's a feature I haven't yet used, but have been meaning to play with. If your phone's like mine, gps should get you within a 10' radius of the true corner. IOW, you don't want to use it for logging woods or anything without a proper survey, but it'll get you close.

Yeah there are lot of features that I'll have to test when I'm out there or even just in town, like retracing a path. That could be handy too.

I found GPS to be fairly accurate at times but would not rely 100% on it if I'm trying to gauge my exact property line either. I drew out my property line ahead of time in GIS based on looking at ministry of natural resources map and cross referencing with other info I had, and when I hit the line I looked up and saw ribbons in the trees so it gets surprisingly close. But I also don't know 100% how accurate those ribbons are either... I don't believe the property has been officially surveyed as that would probably be a lot of money to do for a property that size. At some point I do want to build a trail and put some sort of more permanent marker where the ribbons are though, as it would at least give me a rough idea of where the property ends. If I'm lucky I might even find the pins at the corners. Probably want a metal detector for that.
