It looks like Trump and Trumpworld is going all in once again that Biden is essentially a corpse. They took this same angle in 2020 and it didn't pay off when the public could see that Biden was, in fact, not actually deceased.

Anyway until moderators are actually agreed to it's just talk.

Awful idea for Biden. He put on a fairly strong performance in 2020 but that was 4 years ago...he has diminished quite a bit since then. But I guess if they are cutting off mics then maybe it won't be so bad as Trump won't have a chance to talk over him so much.

I think it's a good idea if the rules listed are enforced. Trump will absolutely not do well in that type of setup.

If Trump wants to spend the next month plus lowering the bar for Biden again, which appears likely, that's his choice. They tried this for the 2020 debates and the SOTU....didn't really work out.

Biden screws up off script, yes. But there is enough of him there that he is not stupid.

But Trump off script? Biden does not have to say a word and just let the guy go.

If we get lucky, Trump will start calling him Obama again, and asking for his birth certificate. You laugh, but:

All the more reason to throw the debate challenge now before Trump tries to do the same. Biden and Co will now be able to say we want to have a debate, but Trump is [insert adjectives].

Yea, I agree with this. If you're going to do it then get in a position to fully dictate the rules of engagement. Let Trump be the one to back out.

If Trump shows up, it doesn't really change anything. Trump will be a bully and his followers will love him for it. Biden will show spark and gravitas, something he's already done.

Not being able to ramble on after the time is done, or interrupt Biden, would drive Trump absolutely bugshit, and I can’t imagine he’ll agree to such conditions. We shall see ...

Another (potential) advantage of this for Biden is that it completely cuts RFK Jr. out of the debates. I know it’s up for debate whether RFK pulls more from potential Biden voters or potential Trump voters ...

Modern political "debates" are worse than worthless. They are simply gladiatorial insult-fests for the simple-minded.

Gee, let me pick a President based on two-minute answers, that they will avoid half the time anyway when they aren't being interrupted by someone.

Put a candidate in a town hall setting or just an interview for a couple hours and you'll learn more. But really these candidates have their platform detailed on their sites, and once you know who they intend on hiring you'll know what their government will be like. You'll learn nothing from those clown shows other than who'd make a better host at a comedy roast. Glad there are only two.

Four years is a long time in your 80s.

Also... Biden is now the incumbent, and a burden on HIS back to explain why inflation wasn't his fault. He must be capable of conveying that message clearly and concisely in a VERY short format. Or he is doomed to fail. He needs to explain how he is fighting inflation, how he is the solution instead of the problem. Trump is going to paint Biden as the problem. The difference between today and the pre-pandemic era.

Our President needs to be a highly competent speaker to sway the undecided - now that he got left holding the bag since 2021.

Trump didn't get younger in the last four years either. Few people likely to be swayed by the debates either way.

This is an excellent idea by Biden.

Biden today is about the same as he was four years ago. Trump is very much not and I think America will be shocked at the level of his decline. The best thing Biden can do is remind America who Trump is.

I assume a large part of the calculus here is the idea that the more regular people hear and see Trump again the less they'll like him instead of effectively imagining him as kind of a vessel for their own views again.
