4080/4080S is a lot of GPU. Enjoy!
It really is. I wanted a true comfortable 4K card that blows GTA6 out of the water... I was aiming for 5080. But 4080S is more than fine for the 1440p monitor which is barely a year old... especially at $765 tax-free.

$1066 - 765 = $301 (that's a 28% discount)

I think this is pretty bad ass. It can play RDR2 and CP2077 maxed at 1440p 90fps~ without ever turning on DLSS 3.5 or FG. When 5000 series come out, my 4080S should hopefully play at 5070 level.. if not 5060 (ew). But then I don't see 5060 being that strong.

I was going to wait for the RTX 5080 since my current games play more than fine with the beastly CPU & RAM on the old RTX 2070. And I wanted a 5000 series for GTA6. But it'll be until January 2025++ at $1200-1400 if I get super lucky and they don't get sold out at every restock.

But scouring FB marketplace got me a great deal! I got a brand new PNY RTX 4080 Super for $765 shipped from some rich dad in Rhode Island.

I'm more than happy. The GPU arrives tomorrow.
Nobody should ever say FB is the scourge of humanity. OK, maybe it actually is.

Then imma take this lady upstairs to my bedroom when it's dark and everyone's asleep tonight. Then I'm parting you open and see what you and I are all about baby.

The gang I got lined up for tonight:
CP2077
RDR2
Helldivers 2 maxed here I come
TLOU
OW2
Halo Infinite
Horizon Westside story whatever.
CS2
FF7R although this ran max already

Some casual results at 1440p max graphics:
  • RDR2 with 2x resolution scaling at 5K: 55-65 fps
  • CP2077 with path tracing, DLSS quality, and FG: 100-110 fps
  • Overwatch is at the monitor refresh max of 165 fps, I can double the scaling, then it becomes 120-150 fps. I prefer the rock solid 165.
  • Forza Horizon 5: 165 fps monitor cap.
  • Ghost of Tsushima: 100-110 fps with no DLSS, no FG
  • Helldivers 2: 120 fps with no DLSS
I'm noticing how quiet the GPU is. It sits pretty at 50-60C during gaming. Some AAA games, the GPU fans are dead quiet at 30%.

Off-topic but how is Ghost of Tsushima so far?
It runs beautifully.

As a game, I'm barely past the intro (40 mins in). This is premature but, the combat feel isn't as satisfying as Elden Ring. I'm talking about the strike feedback, the sound effect, the natural animation between you and the target, etc. I shouldn't compare the two different games, but ER straight-up dropped my jaw with their scenery too.

I know Sucker Punch gave lots of love to this Tsushima, so I'm looking forward getting lost in the open-world feudal Japan.

It's kind of funny.

ER is a bunch of Japanese devs fawning over Western medieval fantasy, combat, gear, and lore.
GoT is a bunch of Californian weebs fawning over Japanese medieval fantasy, combat, gear, and lore.

I'd like to share my casual overclock results for the PNY 4080 Super. It's OC'd and stable at +235mhz core +1100Mhz memory. This makes it base core at 2530mhz and boost clock at 2800mhz. No voltage increase, no fan curve change.

Below are already averages from 3-5 tests.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, maxed, full path tracing, DLSS quality, no FG. I chose no Frame Generation because the base FPS is high enough and FG feels floaty. Maybe it's in my head.
    • Stock: 66 fps avg /51 fps low
    • OC: 71 fps avg / 55 fps low
    • That's a +6% gain avgs and +7% gain lows
    • FG turned on provides about 100-120 fps.

  • Forza 5 Horizon at 1440p, maxed full, no DLSS, no FG. What a beautiful game.
    • Stock: 135 fps avg / 124 fps low
    • OC: 144 fps avg / 132 fps low
    • That's a +6% gain avgs and +6% gain lows

It looks like this is an undeniable +5-6% boost across the board for free. This is an improvement compared to my old 2070 yielding +2% boost.

RDR2 is known for their terrible washed out textures unless they're in their native 4K. Well I used to bruteforce this by doing the in-game resolution scaling by 2x. This was incredibly taxing at 55-60 fps at 1440p ultra (rendering at 2880p).

Well thanks to Nvidia's DLDSR technology and reddit, you can turn on DLDSR in the NVCP (x2.25). Then in-game, you can turn on DLSS-quality to claw back the performance. This renders at 4K, then DLSS actually downsamples it while applying DL stuff at 1440p. The result is an absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous game. Don't let this screenshot fool you, the mountains in the back are tact sharp and crisp.

It's amazing that you can end up with superior quality and performance thanks to advancements in both hardware and software. Unreal. I get a smooth sailing 80-90 fps with incredible visuals.

What a roller-coaster of a thread.

I waited until Oct 2023 to grab a 7800X3D (using AsRock B650M Pro RS Wifi and Team T-CREATE EXPERT 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6000 CTCED532G6000HC38ADC01).

Updated the BIOS, set PBO at 80% of stock settings, used Buildzoid lazy DDR5 settings and it has been hassle free since then; even got the SOC voltage down to 1.056 and it passes stress testing.

It's nice building a rig this nice. On a side note, AMD released info of upcoming R9 9950X processor today. I built my rig in my sig 3 years ago (time flies). I spent more than you and no new video card. Shortages for parts were common. Everything was high. There was no way I was going to spend $2-3K on a video card. Anyways, I'm happy for you.

Not sure if you read what I mentioned before. All my life, I built budget rigs or the best bang-for-the-buck. I came from i3-2130 with 8 gb RAM which was upgraded with a used i7-3770 from AT FS/FT + GTX 1060 6gb. Then I got RTX2070 which actually served me well.

This is my first splurge build ever.

You're rocking a 1080Ti! I would seriously consider framing that GOAT card after you upgrade. I felt like I was on 1060 6gb for ages (2016 - 2022). I remember Overwatch 2 was released and it couldn't handle it while OW1 was fine (mostly same game, but re-built the engine).

I have no reason to upgrade. That 1080 Ti handles my 1440p monitor just fine. I don't hardly ever game. Just get the itch every once in a while. If prices weren't so crazy in 2021, I probably would've upgraded. Right now, finances are tight and it's not a priority. For now, I'm just going to be happy for you!

Just use fancontrol, it does a very good job combining GPU, CPU and case fan profiles.

For anyone that likes fiddly knobs and manual control, I present this, I have a couple and love them, can be put in the case with some velcro or mounted in a 3.5 (if you have one).

That sounds cool but I guess you give up the automatic curve?

Yup, I use one an AIO right now and another one in an older case with 80mm fans that have no PWM; would rather set the fans to a constant happy medium for the AIO vs ramping up and down.

It was easier (and cheaper) on the B650 to get a manual controller, it has like 2-3 PWM fan headers (used by case fans), did not feel like messing with splitting and all that either.

One less software thing to worry about I guess?

I still use PWM on other PC's tho

I think it's retro cool to turn the physical dials up before you launch cyberpunk 2077. It's like a manual turbo mode.
