"After the 2020 presidential election, as some Trump supporters falsely claimed that President Biden had stolen the office, many of them displayed a startling symbol outside their homes, on their cars and in online posts: an upside-down American flag.

One of the homes flying an inverted flag during that time was the residence of Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., in Alexandria, Va., according to photographs and interviews with neighbors.

The upside-down flag was aloft on Jan. 17, 2021, the images showed. President Donald J. Trump’s supporters, including some brandishing the same symbol, had rioted at the Capitol a little over a week before.

I guess the right flies the flag upside down ironically. This court, specifically the majority of the conservatives, have lost all credibility and need to be removed sooner than later.

Alito has a lot of wiggle room on this-traditionally flying the flag upside down means that there is dire distress. To do so otherwise is a crime under f the flag code which is federal law. So we have a case here of a Supreme Court Justice knowingly and intentionally violating federal law.

Whether that federal law would be held as constitutional (i.e., free speech) I personally have grave doubts IF the Court rules rationally and in accordance with constitutional principles-which are not traits of Alito and his fellow travelers.

Aside from the many legitimacy and ethics scandals that SCOTUS finds itself in these days (as a consequence of their own actions), nothing will come of this. It is just another straw on the pile, so to speak.

Honestly, I can't yet bring myself to call this a 'Stop the Steal' symbol. Flying the flag upside down has always had a symbolic significance of actual distress, as others have mentioned. There's a similar drama queen in my neighborhood that flies a flag in this manner on a daily basis. I suppose that I have become desensitized to this as I now see this as an outward sign for people who are "difficult" and "exhausting" to deal with.

I disagree I think the consequences are profound. Decision by decision the Supreme Court's conservative justices tell the American people that the majority are in the pocket of the wealthy and the Republican party, and that their lives mean little, thereby further diminishing the already enormously diminished faith the American people have in their democratic system and bringing the collapse of that system in some mass psychotic catharsis that will bring it all tumbling down into chaos and misery.

This is what happens when self hate projects as victim mentality and the desire to punish someone else for your own moral failures becomes paramount. A neighbor put up a sign saying Fuck Trump near a children's school bus stop and up went the American Flag upside down. The court is full of humorless Rodney Dangerfields.

It's been reported that Alito claims he was only flying an upside-down flag in front of his house on 1/6 because a neighbor had a “Fuck Trump” sign in front of where kids wait for the school bus. Is this a thing he is claiming?

Schools were closed in January 2021 because of the pandemic and there were no school buses or children waiting for them.

Supreme Court justices attend the State of the Union address, but never applaud. They are not supposed to display even a whiff of political partisanship. So a neighbor was displaying an anti-Trump flag and Alito felt it was appropriate for him to counter that message? I’d like to see the rest of the Court grow a spine and censure him for it.

I doubt the message was meant for kids. I think it was meant for the neighbor family, to tell then to watch out, that the violence at the capital could visit them, to tell them who they were fucking with, by leaving up that antiTrump sign.

Don’t mess with those with victim mentality and full of self righteous hate because they feel morally entitled to revenge. Never tell anybody their externalized self hate is the result of ancient damage they have built their entire reputations to pretend never happened as if worldly social stature can hide the truth or bring back the joy of being lost so long ago.

OTOH you aren't a Supreme Court justice and one of a cabal of six that are currently going wild setting binding policy for this country (probably for decades) based almost entirely upon political philosophy with only a thin veneer of attempted justification by very strained interpretations of the Constitution. The same group that is working as hard as they can to prevent Donald Trump from facing justice-at least not facing it before the election.
