Beverly LaHaye, Soldier of the Christian Right, Dies at 94

A pastor’s wife, she formed Concerned Women for America to oppose the Equal Rights Amendment. Ronald Reagan called her “one of the powerhouses on the political scene.”

I heard it on the radio yesterday and wanted to look up her opinions a bit more because the picture they were presenting made no freaking sense: A woman against equal rights for women despite the fact that she obviously enjoyed wielding power herself.

This article really brings home the craziness of conservatism when cheer-led by those who would be subjugated by it: As a housewife, she hated the routine of chores at home, so when she got out of doing that, she did her utmost to make sure that women didn't get the choices she did.

But she's special! Those rules, they are for normal people. Normal people need to understand that they are there to be told what to do not question their betters!

I just don't understand how such people have apparently never been taken to the cleaners in a debate which causes them to either bow out of politics completely or rethink their position. Admittedly the BBC talked about her preference for 'soft' uses of power, to avoid argument and that she had a persuasive aspect to her personality. Perhaps she also worked in a cult-like way, keeping within her clique so that she can't be challenged by different = dangerous ideas.

They just don't hear anything contrary to their world view. Well they do but they filter it out because it's coming from lesser people who don't know whats good for them.
Peoples opinions naturally ossify as they get older but these people start out with their opinions carved in granite. If you challenge them on that they'll say that that's a positive thing as well.

I think the 'quiet part out loud' element is the more surprising part, rather like someone announcing that they just had an abortion but they want to make sure that no-one else can get one.

On the point of the direct approach, I'm also kind of surprised that a 'fellow conservative' didn't just tell her to get back in the kitchen. On one hand one might argue that as long as they're all cheering for the same thing that they won't bother looking too closely at each others' hypocrisies, on the other hand if vulgar displays of power get them off then why not adopt the direct approach.
