Well that's got to be a hell of a quandary for right-wingers: The horrible woke new-fangled vehicles are better for mowing down protesters than combustion engine vehicles! /s

The only difference is noise level. Perhaps pedestrian should look out for cars when crossing the street instead of staring at the phone?
while i do agree pedestrians have *some* responsibility for their own safety, maybe we should make more pedestrian-friendly cities so that walking is inherently safe - or vastly safer than it currently is?

Of course. I am a fan of the traffic light type that has a dedicated phase just for pedestrians. So 3 phases, two for cars and one for pedestrians. They can cross diagonally if they want to. This makes it safe for everyone.

I don't disagree, but sometimes you can only do so much for that guy that crosses in the middle of the road staring at his phone.

I almost ran over a baby once because of someone's assumed right of way.

Perhaps we should stop designing infrastructure that is actively hostile to any mode of transportation other than cars. Cars hit a lot of stuff, how come it's only when it is a walker/biker that the hittee is blamed?

We are talking about the difference between ICE and EV, not why pedestrians get hit. Personally I would prefer cars don't cross with pedestrians period. But are we willing to pay for that?

Could it be that EVs are far more likely to have giant tablets on their dash and controls buried in those tablets?

EVs also have far less long distance highway driving, where pedestrians rarely get hit. It looks like this analysis didn't actually control for much/anything and just blamed it on the sound.

but that would be proper research. I hate how everything is going to tablet mode. It's a car, not a fucking toy. And the tablet should not obscure the driver's line of sight. I should be able to see the front edge of the hood.

Yep, one step outside the crosswalk...POW! mow 'em down.
err, if it is your turn to cross, you got right of way. As long as you are in the general vicinity of the crosswalk and not the middle of the street, you got right of way and no you should not be mowed down. Or are you a fan of Death Race 2000?

Legally? Sure, in many cases. As a general rule though we need to make it so pedestrians have preferential treatment in basically all circumstances.

I mean, sure, I try not to run over kids chasing balls. But the car is not going to stop on a dime. There are physical limitations to how fast I can stop.

Sure, but the post I replied to wasn't about kids darting in front of a car. Generally speaking we have made our living spaces defer to cars and I think that's a bad idea.
No argument from me on that. I hate driving. When I walk the kids to the bus stop, I wave the car through at the stop sign even if I have right of way. Much less likely for the car to reverse to run us over. Right of way is not helpful if you are dead.

Think this study is bullshit.

They're going to make a study based on the 1% of people who don't wear ear buds who are also visually impaired people who don't look to see what's around them?

No shit. Not really a "pedestrian" incident, but there was a dude standing next to my car while I was in a line to exit a parking garage. After a couple minutes the light turned, and this moron who was staring at his phone picks that second to slowly stroll right in front of me. If I hadn't been watching him expecting something that stupid I would have hit him. As far as I know he never saw me at all, never looked up.

Then you have all the idiots crossing busy roads right in the middle, when there are crosswalks not far away.

Combustion cars are way quieter than they used to be as well.

Of course drivers glued to their phones are a big problem too, as are the "I need a bigger wang" trucks where I doubt the drivers can even see a pedestrian if they are anywhere close to them due to the height of the hoods.

In short, I'd say quieter cars is not our biggest road problem.
