EV's should be mandated to have cow catchers on the front. At least pedestrians stand a better chance of being brushed off rather than sent flying.

Of course drivers glued to their phones are a big problem too, as are the "I need a bigger wang" trucks where I doubt the drivers can even see a pedestrian if they are anywhere close to them due to the height of the hoods.

Mall crawlers always have the most entitled assholes behind the wheel also. Basically an advertisement for "I'm a huge inconsiderate prick with a $1200/mo auto payment".

Everybody needs to put the fucking things down when in motion. I tore up my shoulders avoiding a pedestrian who didn't look and just stepped off into traffic, which was me on my bike with the right-of-way.

Indeed both parties need to be held accountable. But since study is talking about lack of engine noise, he’s definitely pointing the finger at pedestrians to be more alert.

You are way braver than I am to be on a bike anywhere near traffic. I wouldn't even drive a motorcycle considering the lack of focus and sheer size and height of many vehicles nowadays. Of course there's also the weather here making it difficult.

Iirc, don't EVs have a noise added, or at least for backing up?

As someone else noted, how many people now are walking around with noise-cancelling earbuds in (or at least, earbuds)? It's gotta be a large percentage. If I have my apple airpods on cancelling mode I probably wouldn't hear a semi truck next to me.

Overall, getting rid of noise pollution is a great thing.

I find how different states address pedestrians kind of amazing. Where I grew up, we had marked crosswalks and unmarked crosswalks. An unmarked crosswalk was anywhere a pedestrian chose to cross the road. In both cases, drivers had a duty to yield. Where I live now, step outside those painted lines and you're fair game. It's insane.

Also, pedestrians are really, really stupid so it is incumbent on drivers to anticipate that pedestrians are going to do something stupid and drive defensively.

Yeah, I think they all do that. I should know as we own a Tesla, but somehow my oldest son gets to drive it....? I'm torn, it's fantastic to drive but I hate being seen to support that blithering asshole Musk. I sorta kid, I drive so little that it makes little sense for me to drive the least expensively fueled car, I get it.

So above 19mph--I doubt you'd hear most modern cars (EV or not) coming at you at speed in time to get out of the way. This isn't 1975 where everything is loud. Pay attention, both peds and drivers, and cross roads where you should.

err, if it is your turn to cross, you got right of way. As long as you are in the general vicinity of the crosswalk and not the middle of the street, you got right of way and no you should not be mowed down. Or are you a fan of Death Race 2000?
My rule of thumb is, I don't want 'i had the right of way' as my epitaph. Rule of tonnage wins every time.

Well don't I feel glum today now. I've been called a "Muskhole"--did you come up with that all by yourself?

It wouldn't have mattered what I thought about him, though I didn't know much at the time of purchase. It was the wife's car originally, she picked it out and purchased it.

I'm off to call her a Muskhole, that's quite witty!

Ok, I'm over it.
Take it for what it's worth. Anyone driving a Tesla is fair game. I can't understand why anyone would support this guy.

So pedestrians should have to walk a mile plus out of their way to legal cross a street? Otherwise they are open targets? Also research shows Jay walking is actually safer than properly crossing at intersections. Almost like the concept of Jay walking was invented by the car lobby.

That is a design issue. LoL how can jaywalking be safer than designated crossing points?

Could it be that EVs are far more likely to have giant tablets on their dash and controls buried in those tablets?

EVs also have far less long distance highway driving, where pedestrians rarely get hit. It looks like this analysis didn't actually control for much/anything and just blamed it on the sound.

I mean, sound has to be a factor. Just not the only one. I've had EV's creep up behind me walking through parking lots. It's uncanny how silent they are.

A lot of the jay walking I see around town is FAR from safe. I've done it myself if traffic is light and there's a wide median. What I see here, on 3-lane-per-side roads that are quite busy, is people literally dodging traffic to get across, going lane by lane as cars zip by. And most of the time it's within 100 ft of a crosswalk. It's nuts. Simply put, they can't be arsed to wait for a light I reckon.

Certainly they shouldn't be open targets. But they definitely make themselves targets if they do that. Not everyone or even most people walking does this of course, but the ones that do catch your eye!

Again, most cars are so quiet now that the main thing you'd hear anyway at speed is tire noise it seems like. And coming at you 50mph, by the time you hear them you'd better see them.

You want to see driving and pedestrian insanity, go to a big city in China. Ho-ly crap. I was in four big cities and the traffic there made NYC look like a rural side street. Pedestrians do not stop or even really look for cars, cars seemingly don't stop for pedestrians. Street lights might as well be a joke and everyone is honking *constantly*. No idea how it isn't just one big accident, all I can say is, glad we took cabs everywhere.

while i do agree pedestrians have *some* responsibility for their own safety, maybe we should make more pedestrian-friendly cities so that walking is inherently safe - or vastly safer than it currently is?
I grew up in a county that may have had a mile or two of streets that did not have sidewalks. I now live in a county where the only place there are sidewalks is in town or were put in by the developers or subdivisions. Otherwise apparently they are a horrible burden to tax payers. That would certainly help pedestrians.

I'm always amazed at how much tires themselves make noise when an EV goes by.

Edit: not to derail the discussion, but I saw my first Cybercar in person. Reminds me of doodling's I did when I was about twelve of what a future car would look like Also, it really appears to be a prototype. Needs another 6 months of finishing in a design studio.

Naw we need the LAW OF THE JUNGLE on our roadways, none of this right of way crap. Your responsibility for your safety is inversely proportional to how squishy you are.

Pedestrians -> Bicycles -> Motorcycles -> Cars -> Trucks -> Semi's -> Trains.

Pedestrians will die or be injured when hit by anything, therefor they have the greatest responsibility to ensure that they are obeying the law, paying attention, and crossing only where they should.
