If the "Superpowers" that exist are Xi's China, Putin's Russia, and Trump's US, then we definitely need a EU Superpower.
I sort of disagree. Of course you need to rise to the challenge, sure, but does anyone disagree that we need fewer bombs in the world?
I was hoping that America was the one to make the change across the globe.
Guess fucking not. We are going to have another round of this FUCKING BULLSHIT.

edit: I will just say this once.. the way China is doing shit... might not be so shit after all.. The rest of us seems to collapse on our own freedom. PROVE ME WRONG ASSHOLES.

Jewish President sitting down for iftar with family of muslim defender, signing a Ukrainian flag for them. Far cry from the asshole out to divide his own country while alienating and insulting allies.

Zelenskyy has more worth and honor in the skin cells he left on that pen than Trump and Putin possess together. Easy to see why the Turks like him so much.

Zelensky is the goat of leadership for the century. Obviously why Trump hates him. Balls. Integrity. Discipline. Honor. The list goes on.

I don't think you can measure world peace by how many total bombs exist. Assuming that the current three "Superpowers" continue existing, not having at least a "lawful neutral" Superpower existing to protect the remaining western democracies of Europe and North America/western hemisphere should be alarming for the rest of the remaining western democracies of Europe and North America/western hemisphere.

Should France feel comfortable existing on its own with Russia to the East and Oceania to the West?

This isn't necessarily about building more bombs, it's about being able to defend yourselves from the ones that already exist.

On principle I stand opposed to nuclear proliferation - because I KNOW that it's only a matter of time until they are used. More of them, more ticking time bombs to trip nuclear war.
HOWEVER....

Without a rules based order, without trusted Alliances... with the United States BETRAYING nations that gave up Nukes...
Feb 2022 alone was more than enough to ensure that every nation on the planet needs to rush nuclear weapons. Self built and controlled.
Or some day the bigger fish is going to eat the little fish. And Ukraine is the second largest fish in Europe. After that....

People like to talk up how strong and powerful Finland is. Going to defend against Russia if attacked. 5 million people. VS 143 million.
They only survive that if they are holding a fully developed nuclear arsenal. A proper deterrence.

In a world of madness and death, might as well join the club. Not escaping it peacefully.
It's a difference of desired outcome VS the situation we find ourselves in.

The aspiration was that at a certain level of developed country, a developed society, a developed culture, you would come to the realization that hey, lets do free trade and hey lets do away with taxes and tarifss and hey lets do away with these borders and let workforce travel seamlessly... What are we even arguing about, why do we have these bombs? Lets put them away. We all friendly here. Basically the same people. Oh Shit. WE ARE the same people. Who the fuck knew.

Who are you saying no to? Me?

Sure, yes, let's dismantle every single bomb and bullet that exists on Earth.

Is Russia dismantling their armories? China? The US? We just agreed to it, why aren't they acting to disarm themselves too?

The EU should just ignore that and hope the US, China and Russia decide to unilaterally disarm? Do you believe that if the EU and its member countries disarm themselves next week that the US, Russia and China will follow suit?

I'm not sure what your position here is, besides some abstract idea about world peace.

If you believe that the EU and EU member countries unilaterally disarming themselves is a step forward in the goal of world peace, then you and I fundamentally disagree on how "peace" actually works in reality.

I've edited out the no. Guess I was just shouting at the air, not your general direction.

Might be coming up on the first canceled F-35 order.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/f35-blair-trump-1.7484477

Canada reconsidering F-35 purchase amid tensions with Washington, says minister

Canada is actively looking at potential alternatives to the U.S-built F-35 stealth fighter and will hold conversations with rival aircraft makers, Defence Minister Bill Blair said late Friday, just hours after being reappointed to the post as part of Prime Minister Mark Carney's new cabinet.

The remarks came one day after Portugal signalled it was planning to ditch its acquisition of the high-tech warplane.

The re-examination in this country is taking place amid the bruising political fight with the Trump administration over tariffs and threats from the American president to annex Canada by economic force.

There has been a groundswell of support among Canadians to kill the $19-billion purchase and find aircraft other than those manufactured and maintained in the United States.

I assume the Finns receive theirs but anybody else who has orders delivering farther out is going to be a question. There will be no new orders for this plane from Europe or options exercised. Aircraft with no or minimal vulnerability to ITAR will be the only ones considered, namely Rafale and Typhoon. In that vein if Saab wants to sell the Gripen to anybody they're gonna have to get cracking on replacing the US origin or licensed components (especially the engine) for European ones.
I will bet you good euros that is on top of the to do list.

When is Canada joining the EU?
They can't. https://www.politico.eu/article/canadians-want-join-european-union-will-never-happen-paula-pinho/
“We are honored with the results of such a poll. It shows the attractiveness of the European Union, and it shows the appreciation of a very large share of Canadian citizens for the EU and its values,” said Paula Pinho, spokesperson for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, at the Commission’s Wednesday briefing, before adding that she “will not go into” a possible EU application from Ottawa.

Later, in response to a journalist’s question, Pinho confirmed that Article 49 of the Treaty on the European Union states that only European states can apply for EU membership.

I've been thinking about this. I wonder if Atomics are a "great filter" when it comes to the Fermi Paradox.

Think about it this way...atomics, once multiple parties own them, can't really be used without causing a mass-extinction type event. We have come very close to using them due to error, mistrust, etc, but cooler heads have prevailed. There are plenty examples of leaders throughout history who are insane. What are the odds that such a leader will NEVER become a leader of an atomic wielding nation in the next 50 years? 100 years? What about 10,000 years? Our written history doesn't even go back 10,000 years and yet it is jam packed with absolute shitheads in charge of powerful nations.

Maybe a species that invents atomic weaponry is the type of species that will inevitably use it.

It seems Trump's reality distortion field is wavering...

View attachment 119901

That heinous teller of tall tales doesn't mind me much. It's the freak'in idiots (millions of them) who believe those lies of his, who thinks every time Trump exalts himself it's God speaking through him patting him on the head telling him what a good dictator he is. In letters to the editor in our local news rag, there's a constant flow of writers commenting that God has blessed Trump with the skills he needs to lead America the right way and we should all pray to God for having Trump be successful toward making America great again.

This gained momentum after Trump's election along with calls for people to give Trump the time he needs to make things right even as Trump through Elon is dismantling the gov't, destroying hundreds of thousands of people's livelihoods in the process. I mean, having faith in someone is a good thing, but not when it comes to having faith in a convicted felon, known sex offender and a chronic liar whose only purpose in life is to make himself happy no matter who has to die to make it happen.
