Been retired for a few years now, I've been slowly weening myself off consumerism. Too often we buy stuff not really because we need it or even really want it, but instead to make us emotionally feel better. Somewhat contradictorily we have made a few major appliance purchases since the election in anticipation of the damage Trump is doing and will do down the road.

I've rebalanced our retirement accounts, starting last summer and substantially more after the election. In retrospect we did damn good under Obama, Trump 1 and Biden. Those days are over for the foreseeable future IMO. Despite the changes I did we still are getting wacked hard now and probably much worse is coming.

We don't have the space (steep heavily wooded lot), nor do I have the energy to plant a garden, which I regret as that would be a good hedge on what is coming.

I do expect to make many more trips to the farmers market. Local produce will be coming in about the time it starts getting ugly. It will likely cost more (supply/demand) but it will help the local farmers, plus it's a higher quality.
This won't solve the energy problem, but consider a modified Hügelkultur.

Normally you'd build an earth berm out of tree bits + dirt, but you could easily just lay logs down up a hill and cover them with dirt at the same (or a tweaked) angle as the berm itself. They're fantastic producers.

Paid off our 1.5 year old car. Will be paying off the house as well in a matter of months. We are in the bird in hand mindset right now. New house or land hunt is basically paused, can't imagine we are alone. Hopefully things settle eventually or things get worse and we can use some capital to get what we are after.

Oh look, the bargain hunters got wiped out by the shorters today on the market, so far. Up like a rocket, the back down. I wonder who got the word.
Presidents talking about markets, and interest rates, while playing games with tariffs is a magical thing to get rich if you have the whim masters attention.

We rebalanced the wife's 401k buckets at the same time we did our pre-purchases listed above.

Running the numbers this morning were eye-popping! Reducing the company stock % bucket contribution saved our asses! It was a $20k haircut. She was apoplectic until she saw what the number was if she didn’t cut the percentage.
I had to wait until after the market closed today before I replied to my own post.

Shitlol

As a result of the roller coaster financial acumen of Cheeto Jesus our fixed percentage bucket recouped the $20k loss and then climbed another $8000 after today! She executed a $4000 transfer to her fixed bucket. Profit!

Her question to me was “Do another rebalance now to go back to higher % in the company stock bucket?”. I answered not no but fuck no! Lol

Two thoughts at play: 1) set a strategy and just stick with it for the long term, and/or 2) if you think things could still get worse, put contributions towards a cash bucket to move into investments later. But if your horizon is long enough, it probably wouldn't make that much of a difference.

However, I wouldn't put more in company stock. The echoes of Enron should be ringing through everyone's head with that approach. Don't have your retirement so heavily invested in where you draw your paycheck.

Heh heh… 1) that's been a long-term strategy of ours for ~20 years. 2) that was part of our post election rebalance.

We aren’t touching anything else unless shit goes way way south, which is almost like a 50-50 proposition these days! We have a protocol for that also.

Had to run some errands this afternoon, including taking something ordered through Amazon to a Kohl's for return (or pay $7 to take it to a UPS store), so fuck Amazon.

Anyway, this required going by the mall, typically a traffic nightmare, then on to Kohl's down the road. Traffic was really light for a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Kohl's parking lot was empty! There were probably no more than 10 cars in front of the store. Going all the way to the back of the store to drop off the Amazon return, there I saw about 3 customers wandering around.

Kohl's appears to be the type of store where people cutting back in discretionary spending would show up first.

That's what the parking lot in front of the Khol's at the Kitsap Mall looks like all the time. Heck, you could sell off half of the whole parking lot at this point. Winco took over the Sear's a couple years ago.

I have no comparison at this Kohl's, as I was a Kohl's virgin until yesterday, and it is in part of a center I never find myself.
