I simply cannot with the heat in the south. It’s 105 in Austin today. My husband starts sweating at the mere thought of going outside.

California gas prices have always been higher relative to where I’ve lived so not surprised buy them. We already have one EV and I’m going to trade my PHEV in for one soon after the move.
That will save you a bucket of cash if you drive much, SC is around $7.50 a gallon, where I live it's hovering around $6.25. I'm spending around $600 a month for fuel, and another $800 a month to my crew to ease the pain a little. An electric truck would be awesome, but unobtainable at this time.

The conditions for crime aren't crime. I'm interested in violent crime and theft, the actual numbers. That seems like the best way to measure violent crime and theft.

To ignore other indicators that drive up crime rate (violent and non-violent) is equivalent to burying your head in the sand. If you truly believe there is no correlation between unemployment and crime rate, then your head is already in the sand.

I know it’s dangerous, but it’s not criminal - Greenman

Very sensible when you see those indicators change. When they've been flat for the long term and actual crime hasn't increased those indicators become the base line, they've established the norm in that area.
I also doubt the veracity of looking at by state. The stats paint a broad picture of what can be a very localized problem.

Well, I am glad you have come to realize that making a broad statement is dumb at best. You observed crime rate has gone up in your local area, that may be the case or not but please don't apply this generalization to the entire state.

Good Luck with your move!

I am moving to another state, but not because of blown budgets. My primary goal is an equal or better quality of life for less money. Turns out that's pretty easy to do.
I've lived here for over 60 years, and clearly remember when it was an absolutely awesome place. Now it's over crowed, dirty, and crime is rampant. The last couple of times I've been robbed the police won't even come out to take a report, they have a website where you file your own police report. A cop signed them and emailed me a copy.
The city I live in had to shut down the local park because it was littered with used needles. Lots of places in the Bay area feel like a third world country. I don't want to live like that, so I have to move.
I moved to the bay area in 1985. Obviously you chose the wrong neighborhood but at least you will profit handsomely from your initial investment. There are many conservative places to retire like flordia that I'm sure are more your style. Good luck with your move.

Purchased in 91. Actually a very nice, very blue collar neighborhood that's now trying hard to become gentrified. If someone would plant some grapes over on the nearby hillside I'd be able to move in my private jet.

LMAO

The cops used to come out for robbery? Man thats some service. Which expensive burg do you live in? Unless somebody died or was about to die the cops wouldn't bother to show up at most of our stores which were scattered across mid to large sized towns and smaller cities. Meth heads steal a dump truck and drive it though a cinderblock wall to get your non-existent ATM? Go to the station and file a report. Manager skips town with the contents of the safe? Go to the station and file a report. Nutcase sets fire to a half dozen cars in the parking lot? Go to the station and file a report (after the FD is done of course). Drunken person urinates on the other customers and refuses to leave? Well you get the idea.

I've personally interacted with the cops maybe three times at our business. One a cop lost their gun in our store (we found it), two an employee was being sought for connection to a murder, and three somebody expired in store due to natural causes. I wouldn't set your sights too high in this department.

Man I would have killed for a website instead of dealing with whatever surly officers are riding the front desk on a random day.

I live in the bay area, and I honestly don't know what he's talking about. I guess it depends where in the bay area he lives. Perhaps he lives in the city of Oakland, or in SF. In the burbs, crime is very low. There hasn't been a murder in the town I live in since the mid 70's. The cops always come out for reports of burglary. Why not? They have little else to do but that and issue traffic tickets. All of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties (i.e. Silicon Valley) are pretty low in crime and generally have quick police response.

For whatever reason I always thought he lived in the east bay. Could certainly be wrong though.

Yup, east bay.
Most of my work is in Albany, El Cerrito, Berkeley area. Had my projects cleaned out three times by thieves over the last couple of years. The last one the police told me point blank they wouldn't do anything because the DA wouldn't prosecute burglary. Traffic has become intolerable, and there isn't much chance I'll ever be able to work from home.
The decision to move out of state was pretty easy to make. I was raised on a ranch and the lifestyle works for me, I enjoy country living, and have no issue at all with hard work. My wife loves pets and will likely collect a respectable menagerie.

The idea of looking at unpopular areas was an accident. But it turns out there are absolutely beautiful locations with low population, and down right reasonable prices. If it all works out as planed I'll end up in a lovely secluded home with no debt and the ability to do whatever I want. I wish everyone could spend the last years of their life in the same situation.

There is always the chance that I'll drop dead the week before this all takes place, or the economy takes a serious dump and my assets evaporate, but that is as they say "life".

That is some grim outlook on life, cheer up a little. You move where you feel you'll be the happiest and you don't owe anyone an explanation (except maybe your loved ones). Life is too short to begrudge a place that will not matter much to you soon. I wish you good luck and happiness wherever you may end up moving to.

Thank you.
That may have come across a little grimmer than intended. The point is that I'm going where I want to do what I want.

I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Was prescribed Semglee long lasting insulin.
Retail price is $295/vial. Kaiser charged me $10 for 3 vials. I am amazed at Kaiser's prescription coverage
and also scared as how I am going to afford this if my employer decides to close the business.

One vial is good for 10 days of use.

I don't know how uninsured diabetic patients can survive. We really need single payer universal healthcare in the U.S.

Was going to start a new thread, but thought this may be the place to post.

Back on topic, it looks like California may have it's insulin supply by next year. I can't find any information on the manufacturing facility but it doesn't really matter where the stuff is made.

Working in some of this space, I think it's safe to say that list price, retail price and what payers actually pay have very little relationship with one another.

But part of having the ability to control pricing is being able to say "no, we're not going to reimburse for that - patients at least have to try X, Y, or Z first" (or, "we're only covering A and B). That's how other countries keep their costs down. Drugs get approved, but only some get covered under formularies (and sometimes even greater restrictions on who can get this prescriptions).

To extend on this a bit, as a T1D myself:

Various 'coupons' exist that can make insulin much cheaper, but you need insurance to access the coupon. Probably because the insulin companies understand that they will soon be undercut. A current example: 5 pens (so ~1.6 vials worth of fast acting or basal(long lasting) insulin) off the amazon pharmacy (yes, it really is a thing) are only $35 for the set without insurance helping with that, but if your doctor didn't arrange the request to require 5 pens for a month, you might pay $50 for only 1, instead of $35 for 5; and also, even if you aren't using your insurance to help cover payment, you still need the prescription written by your doctor (so essentially, under your current insurance) to access the insurance-doesn't-pay-anyway price. As far as I'm concerned the prices are essentially made up in a game of darts.
