Good morning.

IK am contemplating a new workstation build and was looking at the 9950X.

Can a Scythe Fuma 3 CPU Air Cooler cool this CPU and let me run it without thermal throttling?

I have never been a fan of AIO setups, so, I would prefer to stay Air Cooled if possible.

Thank you!

It’s not that good for AM5 CPUs. I recommend looking at Thermalright for the Phantom Spirit 120 SE or one of their bigger coolers.

Really???

I have a Scythe Fuma 3 currently installed on my gaming machine with an AMD 9800X3D, is it sufficient for that?

Thank you!

It’s enough for the 9800X3D, but judging by how the Fuma 3 fared with a Zen 4 7900X in the test I linked above, I think you’re asking too much of it to cool the 9950X.

He mentioned the ordinary 9950X which has a PPT of 230W.
9950x is a 170w TDP processor. Just because it can draw more power for a short period of time doesn't mean it will produce that much heat. It cycles to base clocks after boosting.

AFAIK Zen 5 has better thermals than Zen 4 (or a combo of improved thermal resistance at IHS level and lower power).

This can be seen in the Techpowerup review of 9950X.

What is totally fubarred about this whole sub-discussion, is the DEFAULT bios for Zen 5 sets the target temp to 95c, so the processor going to that temp with the ghz as high as possible. The temps on the bottom of the graph say "throttled at 94.5" when that is default target temp.

Somebody has no idea what they are talking about.

Edit: mine is running 200 watt load at 4.9 ghz and its only half the threads, but that is by the way its setup, NO SMT. Its 100% load for the 16 real cores. Its been this way for days, all day 100% load. Using the Assassin cooler I referenced.

You guys are aware the Scythe Fuma 3 is on the same stage or near the Bequiet Darkrock Pro, both being a 6 heat pipe dual tower cooler right?

And the just changing the fans to something with better performance can do a lot more then getting a new cooler all entirely, unless he goes very large AIO 360.

So possibly like replacing to a more powerful fan on a better PWM curve might even be a better solution all together.

Also, keep in mind you can reduce the thermal target for Ryzen CPUs if you want it to run cooler. It may reduce performance a bit at times, depending on workload, but this is a tradeoff.

^ the 9950x3d is a 150w processor. above is 225w

I've no idea on the cooler, as I don't own it and know nothing about it, however, the TDP of both the 9950X3D and the 9950X is 170W, while the peak power consumption is 230W. I just wanted to bring that up because I see a ton of fudging of numbers, so I felt the need to mention this. PBO obviously changes this entirely, but that is overclocking, so unless you are doing that, see above. 🍻
