I'm not a Catholic, although I was raised around the church...lots of friends who were. Francis seemed to be the most progressive pope in my lifetime.

Not sure about how long the Roman Catholic church has left. Part of me worries that desperation could lead to a troublesome Pope.

As someone who'd love to see a huge sinkhole just swallow the Vatican, I can still say RIP to the least irritating pope of my lifetime. Guy was even funny a few times.

Given the nature of the Church, largely structured as a medieval institution (eg, king/lords/vassals), and it's extremely conservative groups, I can celebrate that there was a more progressive minded pope who has tried to push the Church in a direct more true to the teachings of Jesus: help the poor and downtrodden and love one another, regardless of who they are, because we are all made as we are by our creator.

I’m not a religious person in the slightest but this pope, in my lifetime, seemed to be the closest to what the Bible actually preached. I do fear what his replacement will be. Then again, if it goes the opposite direction Francis tried to go then hopefully the religion will just continue dying.

I would hope that the pope used his time to also promote like-minded cardinals.

To my understanding he did. He appointed 110 of the 140 eligible to vote in the papal conclave IIRC.

The issue? if the next pope is even more progressive, they will screw the Christians and become fully Russian Ortodox religion.

I used to think everything Trump touches dies…but Vance may somehow be even worse.

Edit: Should go on to say that my expectation is that the next Pope will be a tad more “conservative” than Pope Francis.

With Trump shutting down USAID and the State Department’s Africa bureau, it would be a helluva thing to see the first African Pope elected. Imagine the kind of soft power the Vatican could wield over a continent looking for an alternative to China. But even if that happens (not holding my breath) that Pope would almost certainly be more conservative.

They hated the man.

Probably cause he wasn't frothing at the mouth in hatred, and seemed like a good man overall.
