Another repair quote request - someone hit my car while in parking lot and worse than the little ding.

Well this is just f'ing great. If you saw my other thread about the question for DING repair, this is worse.

I am not even positive where/when this happened, but it was either at my gym this morning or at the grocery store this afternoon.

My wife got home and asked me when I hit my car and I was like what are you talking about so we went outside, and yep some asshole scraped my god damn car. I'm guessing they did not take a turn wide enough.

It's not dented or anything, just completely scratched. Thankfully it did not hit the metal quarter panel and it's just plastic. The bumper is scratched and then the plastic around the wheel well.

I am hoping they could just buff out the bumper stuff then paint it, and then the part in the wheel well is textured so I'm guessing it would have to be replaced.

Anyone have any ballpark of the range I should be looking to repair this if I pay out of pocket? I have absolutely no experience with body shops. My collision deductible is $1k so I hope it's not going to be near that much but just have no clue.

Just get the three closest shops to you. Check their reviews online and go with the median one. You're gonna get the job done regardless.

Hard to tell, but is that even a collision (there would be more damage)? If that was an older car, I would just buff 95% of that out (assuming minor abrasion of the clear coat).

Body work is expensive, so if they have to re-paint anything, it's probably already above $1k. Avoid chains like Maaco, and the ones that are cozy with the insurance companies generally don't have the best reviews either.

At some point in time, you'll stop caring but for now just park super far away from everyone else I guess. People are just fucking assholes. In 2018, my car was parked on the street in my neighborhood and hit by some large truck overnight. It was undriveable, and had to be towed to a body shop. IIRC it was a little over $10k for the repairs. City of San Jose police was surprisingly honest when I filed a report; they told me absolutely nothing would be done.

The photo makes it looks like it gouged up the plastic, in which case the bumper will need to be removed, repaired, and repainted. I can give you a very specific number on the cost if you want, I am in the collision repair industry. PM me if you'd like assistance.

PM sent.

And yah, it isn't like very "top level" surface scratched, they are a bit deeper than that for sure, at least some of them.

I wasn't sure if they would have to repaint the entire bumper or just that area.

Another reason I'm concerned is because it's been ceramic coated and will I have to get the entire bumper redone or just a section of it.

EDIT:

And I do park far away from everyone. I always have and always do. And this shit still happened. Neither the grocery store nor the gym had anyone parked next to me before I arrived and when I left.

The damage looks like it may have been caused by something besides another vehicle's bumper, like a utility bed or maybe a trailer fender.

Btw, the ceramic will need to be re-applied to the entire bumper, though the shop will need to tell you how long to wait for the paint to 100% cure.

Okay gotcha and makes sense.

This god damn asshole is going to cost me a lot of money.

High deductibles are rough, most people go with $500. Every carrier is different, with mine the savings between $500 and $1000 was so small it wasn't worth the hassle to switch it over to the higher deductible.

Yeah I think I went with the default one when I got the car.

I just checked and changing from $1k -> $500 will be $78 more per 6 months, so $156/yr more. If I only had to pay $500 deductible right now to repair this it would be a no brainer and I could get the ding repaired as well.

Would it be worth it to just call my insurance company to talk to them about this incident? This is the first time this has ever happened to me so I am not sure if I should call them and tell them what happened, and then see if I want to file a claim or not.

Is there any downside to just calling them and reporting the incident and asking questions about it?

There should not be any downside to calling and talking about it. It will only count against your policy if the have to pay out on a claim.
Thanks.

I was just looking at my policy and I have the UMPD for my car which is $250 deductible to cover up to $15k, however Geico offers an enhanced version which specifically says it is for uninsured AND hit and run, which I don't have. I checked and adding that would be $6 more per month.

I am going to call and see if maybe they can let me use UMPD to cover this indicent and then on top of that I will adjust my policy to have the enhanced version.

The worst they can do I guess is say no.

Wow okay so I guess I kind of lucked out with my insurance.

I have UMPD coverage and even though it's not that enhanced one, it covers hit and run in MD so my deductible is $250 for up to $15k repairs (wont be close to that) instead of the $1k I thought.

So yeah I'll take that as the best case scenario right now.

I am also thinking that the "repair" should include the cost of the ceramic coating on the bumper as well but will have to confirm that. I definitely have proof that it was recently coated.

Got a quote today from the place I want to get it done and it is quoted at $2176, and that does not include the calibration they are going to have to do to the sensors and camera either. It also does not include the ceramic coating that will be done 30 or so days after the repair is done.

All because this god damn asshole couldn't drive and didn't have the balls to stick around to tell me what happened.

Blending adjacent panels in the context of a bumper job should be fairly rare, reserved for very challenging colors. Charging upfront for calibrations that are often unnecessary is pretty common, though. But there could be more damage to the bumper than meets the eye in a photo. Even though it's totally repairable, occasionally a bumper is inexpensive enough to replace even for relatively minor damage. It's off already anyway if the shop is following good SOPs. Also there are some instances where the OEM states that anything more than one paint job is forbidden over any sensor. That's a little extreme though. Certainly you wouldn't want repair material and primer along with the second paint job in front of a sensor, but a coat of clear has never thrown anything off in my experience. The area of purbeast0's damage is not near a sensor other than a park sensor, which is not occluded by the bumper paint anyway.
