As you said, Daggerfall was full of bugs. Many of them were game-breaking. And that was a time when patches didn't really exist, not in the way they do now. You bought a game and played it straight out of the box. It was enough for me to not want to buy another Bethesda game.

Then Skyrim came out and it was getting such rave reviews, so I took a chance and bought it. SURPRISE! It was buggy too, though not as bad as Daggerfall by any means, and by now "patch culture" was now accepted. I played it a bit, it was OK, but I had other things going on in life so I put it aside. Came back years later to try again; it was essentially done and stable and the mods were amazing. Installed it and... no mod support. Turns out in the years since I bought it they overhauled the engine or something and deprecated the release version. It was no longer supported. Apparently they had an offer for a free upgrade to the new version but it was time limited and had expired. So I had bought another Bethesda game, this one apparently worth playing, only to find that Bethesda had screwed me out of the ability to actually play it.

Never again.

I mean... there was a half-decade between the release of Skyrim and SE, and you can still play the original with original's mods... SE is just better.

Yes, Bethesda's games do always come with some bugs in them (more recently not as many as are claimed, though). There's a reason their games are played for actual decades, though.

I've been playing it because Game Pass... it's, fine. Looks great, combat is still trash but fun enough to mess around with here and there. I did play the original way back in high school/college days, but it was very not my cup of tea and I kinda hated it. Wanted to love it, though... same with Skyrim. I know it's a great RPG I just can't get into it.

C'mon Fallout 3 remaster tho...

i am 80 hours in right now, and i have done but a fraction of the available quests.

i am finding it really hard to express my feelings about this game.

Oblivion back in the day, was a masterpiece. It certainly has aged, but also the new lick of paint is doing wonders.

Strictly looking at gameplay, the game has a problem with difficulty. In that, you are first completely incapable of doing anything. Then you are ok. And then you are obscenely overpowered.

The problem is that, out of the idk 15 skills that exist, about half of them break the game once you get around Journeyman level. Invisibility breaks the game. Chameleon breaks the game. Paralysis breaks the game. Athletics breaks the game; when you can walk backwards *while firing a bow* faster than the mobs can rush you .. there's not much left to challenge you. Or, at least, all these things break *some* part of the game.
I mean, Mercantile has been "fixed" and now you drown in money, so even though Speechcraft has been also fixed, you don't need it - just bribe everyone.

The quests, well ... the quests are better than Skyrim. Because the game designers decided that you need a bit more creativity in trying to solve them.
But, they are also almost entirely linear, so while you may need to think "how do i get this info from this NPC that won't talk to me", there is normally only ONE way to solve the problem. And while the game doesn't give away the solution, sometimes more than "i need to figure out what this Orc wants" i need to think "i need to figure out what this idiot developer wants me to click".

It's also still buggy AF, both with old bugs (not all) and some new bugs, because hey, it wouldn't be Oblivion without bugs and CTDs.

If you are someone like, that grandmother that plays Skyrim on Youtube, and that fully immerses herself into the dialogue and lore, pays excessive attention to things like NPC names, and tone of voice, then Oblivion is great for you. Take it as a social / walking simulator with a bit of casual combat thrown in.

If you want a RPG challenge, stay away.

If you have already played Oblivion and don't completely hate it, yeah give it a try; the Remastered version is overall better in just about every way. Not by MUCH, but still better.

Remastered looks like a gimmie at $10. For anything more my nostalgia can wait.

Never liked Oblivion, it always represented everything wrong with open world gaming to me. The over reliance on serendipitous events and emergent gameplay over a tightly crafted narrative and scripted events with actual emotional punch.

Played a lot of it back in college though, thanks to the *ahem* DRM free nature of the game all you needed was a simple DVD burner to enjoy if one of your friends snagged a copy.

Was my generation's "wide as the ocean, deep as a puddle" game.

yeah, that or maybe fifteen bucks at best. It's not bad, but it's not good. or it's good, but also bad.

I think i have finally formulated a solid perspective of Oblivion; it has so many good things, and it also has so many bad things, that whether it's a great game or complete shit, depends on which side each person is focusing on. There are enough good things for someone to be completely absorbed by them and never pay any care to the bad things, and there's enough bad things for anyone to completely overlook the good and absolutely hate it.

Im really enjoying it tbh. It's really crashy though but that kind of adds to the authenticity of a Bethesda game!
Tbf it seems to crash mostly entering a new area and it auto saves before that so its slightly annoying restarting it rather than losing an hours gameplay because you forgot to save.
