I take it with a IR missile there's no radar warming of a lock-on. Does the drone need radar to find the plane or it uses other sensors?

depends what they decided , active radar / passive radar , IR , anti radiation ( trace an RF emitter ) are all common detection methods.

Correct, it's a passive system. Usually no warning, the target doesn't see itself get lit up first. That part often matters more than the speed or warhead size of the missile. There are different flavors of MAWS out there that can detect incoming IR missiles, afaik they all have limitations and none of them are great solutions. If that Sukhoi had one it sure didn't help!

For detection and engagement I'm pretty sure they are using optical systems with IR abilities. Maybe radar if they aren't going for stealth on that model. Optical is fine for ground launched R-73 distances. Think of them as souped up MANPADs. The old Russki can sprint about 4 times the distance of an Igla, and with a warhead 10lbs heavier than a Stinger's. Drones probably got machine gunned later but that's a hell of a trade for a Su-30.

The Ukrainians are operating their sea drones in swarms now. The story goes (as reported by Russian military bloggers) that the Russian effort to rescue the crew out of the water was hampered by the continued presence of these sea drones to the point that they had to send in a civilian ship. To their surprise, the Ukrainians did NOT in fact attack this CIVILIAN ship as they rescued those pilots but kept circling around it like sharks.

The Black Sea is slowly becoming a Ukrainian lake and playground for their drone fleet and there isn't much the Russians can do about it.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the Kremlin right now...ahahaha

Seems Big Z may have really won over Mohammed bin Bonesaw and others in OPEC. Looks like the cartel is going to again crank production.

"OPEC+ has agreed to raise oil output by 411,000 barrels per day in June, continuing a strategy shift aimed at disciplining quota violators and responding to global calls for lower fuel prices. The decision mirrors a similar production hike for May and signals the bloc’s growing willingness to tolerate lower oil prices, even at the expense of short-term revenues.

Led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, the move has caused oil prices to fall to around $61 a barrel—near four-year lows—deepening pressure on producers already navigating a market saturated by strong U.S. supply and softening Chinese demand.

Though some analysts see the strategy as a method to restore internal cohesion by punishing overproduction from countries like Kazakhstan, it also carries broader geopolitical weight—particularly for Russia.

The Kremlin, now in its third year of a full-scale war against Ukraine, has relied on inflated oil revenues to sustain its economy, fund its military, and fuel its campaign of terror across Ukraine. As a designated terrorist state by multiple European parliaments and a serial violator of international law, Russia’s dependence on oil is its greatest strategic vulnerability.

Every dollar shaved off the price of crude eats into Russia’s budget, already weakened by sanctions and military overreach. Moscow needs oil prices far above current levels to maintain fiscal balance—let alone finance its war. A prolonged period of depressed prices would squeeze Russia’s ability to pay soldiers, procure weapons, and continue evading sanctions through discounted sales to China and India.

While Riyadh’s motivations may include strengthening ties with the U.S. and stabilizing long-term influence within OPEC+, the side effect is clear: Russia will hurt. And in the broader context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that’s a development welcomed by much of the democratic world."

Putin just doesn't have that kind of wiggle room or time. Now we just need Kadyrov to get sufficiently froggy, and boom, 1991 v2.0 is here. Then everyone leaves. Bye Putin, I hope it's a swift gust of gravity that carries you from power.

Would be a real shame if a civil war were to erupt on Russia's doorstep. Would be a real shame if a couple of Ukrainian drone squads were found to help out any rebels. Would be a real shame....

A strike on Moscow during the festivities would be AMAZING.
Pro Ukrainian channels hope it was a ploy to draw back air defense. So that closer, more occupied Ukrainian targets are available. Such as that damn bridge.
Forcing Russian logistics closer to the front line would be a nice advantage in the years ahead.

The Verkhovna Rada has ratified the mineral agreement with the US.

I wonder if the agreement gives the USA exclusive rights to the minerals in question. That aside, at face value, it seems the agreement is mutually beneficial.

Not yet. Maybe won't happen. Maybe it will.

Meanwhile Poland and France sign a defense treaty.

And there is this...

Germany, Poland, England and France. Is NATO dead?
Yes. I figure that the only reason the US is still around NATO is cause someone Trump figures the membership can be used as leverage. Greenland maybe?
I love seeing this. Build something NATO-ish without the US on the sidelines so when the US tries to pull weight we can be like, Ok, Bye Felica.

Merz said that future arms deliveries to Ukraine will be classified. Hopefully that means that in a few months the Russians will only find out they handed over Taurus when the Kerch bridge is exploding.
