Moving and landing jets at high speed on a moving carrier is dangerous and unforgiving. As I understand it on the first one it was being towed by a tractor that the driver lost control of and it went over with the tractor (pilot not involved). The latest one was a failure in the arresting cable system (pilot also not involved). Hard to stop without an arresting cable.

But I think we can all agree that a jet roaring in hot being buffeted by the wind attempting to land on a postage stamp moving away from them that is bobbing and weaving with the ocean current has to be pretty damn challenging to put it mildly. Huge pucker factor!

That is why they record and evaluate every landing on a carrier.

They just don't make pilots like they used to I guess.. too many MAGA incels just selected because of Y chromosome and skin tone and absolutely nothing else.. not even IQ.

But is it not unusual to suffer the loss of three air-crafts in such a short period of time?

May be rare, but I also feel sure it isn't the first time. I saw nothing irresponsible listed as a cause. Except for the human error with friendly fire. I was mistaken about the tractor dragging the jet off the deck. Both the mishaps onboard the carrier were from the arresting cable system failing during a landing. During one of these losses a Tow Tractor was also lost over the side. The third loss was a Friendly Fire incident. The biggest cause of alarm here is the Friendly Fire downing a jet.

Arrestment System Failures:
The first two Super Hornet losses involved failures in the arrestment system, which uses cables to stop the aircraft upon landing. In one instance, a tow tractor also went overboard during the same incident. The exact cause of the arrestment failures is under investigation, but it's clear that the system didn't work as intended, causing the jets to go overboard.

Friendly Fire:
In December, a Super Hornet was shot down by the USS Gettysburg in what the Navy described as a friendly fire incident. The jet was on a refueling mission when it was mistakenly targeted.

I’m really hoping the next president takes the plane and donates it to FEMA or something similar and cites the emoluments clause. In normal times, a gift from a foreign country, any country, to a US president becomes property of the US and not the president himself. If Trump gets to keep it for personal use and used tax payer money to upgrade it, I will have to resort to violence against any maga or Republican who even so much as whispers about government fraud and abuse.

The most disturbing/annoying part of that is Lipton, a very senior NYT reporter, apparently does not know what corruption is. You 100% do not need a provable quid pro quo for it to be corruption.

For example I wonder what Lipton's employer would say if he covered Qater as part of his job and he accepted a $400 million jet from them, even if there was no promise of favorable coverage. Actually, I don't. He would be fired.
