Steeplechase
Einstein@Home
https://einsteinathome.org/
I am hearing that they still have this idiotic scheduler behavior in place:
einstein server said:
No work sent
(reached daily quota of 1024 tasks)
Project has no jobs available
Project requested delay of 6663 seconds
Not entirely coincidentally, einstein@home is one of the projects from which I am staying away, even though their scientific subject is interesting.

(The above issue can be worked around with multiple client instances per host once again. But why should one be forced to such measures, contests aside.)

This sounds or looks interesting! But please contribute to WCG for the TeAm if you can!

A prior version of this caused them to IP ban me for 24 hours.

(Only TeAm members can see what's at "this" link to learn what "this" is. (≖‿≖))

Not that I am taking any credit for the rise from 2018 until now ....
But that is when I went deaf and dizzy and was pretty much confined to inside, and started building the fleet you see now.

So I have HELPED in this rise, thats all I take credit for.

Not only have you HELPED, you have INSPIRED!
We need more participation from small fries like me. Maybe i'll ask the mods if I can spam multiple topics to get more recruits.

Made it my goal for this year to sell off all my old equipment and upgrade. Maybe a 50 series card and a AM5 system. I was eyeing the servers godman is selling is FS/FT, but said, no, that's not enough firepower.

(PS, "staying away between contests", that is. I tend to be much more tolerant of project quirks when a contest is on.)

I would, but there is an earlier commitment.

Well personally I would love if WCG's scheduling server said had reached a daily quota of 1024 tasks, since this would mean would have enough work to the end of the Pentathlon.

Instead, WCG is spitting-out "Another scheduler instance is running for this host" and if this continues would run-out in less than 2 hours.

Depends on whether we talk about a machine finishing 500 tasks per day, or a machine finishing 1500 tasks per day, for example. Einstein@home is doing this to limit the damage done by malfunctioning hosts. But their scheduler policy is not smartly tuned, putting it politely.

The "Another scheduler instance is running for this host" bug was rectified by the WCG admins within roughly 2 hours.

BTW, outside of contests, I usually set the workqueue depth to something on the order of 0.75 days. That way, if my internet connection goes down after I went to the workplace and the modem doesn't manage to auto-reconnect, the queue doesn't run empty before I come back home after work.

NOT well. [H]ardOCP used to call themselves the [H]orde, but we seem to have found the true horde. Or maybe you guys are like the Flood in Halo??? Never ending! That's for sure!!!!

I shouldn't say "NOT well", I suppose. I mean, 5 out of 6 Gold isn't bad, right? (Nervously goes and checks this hour's WCG stats...)

What do you think we are? lol

We're a small team of ~20 people who game, work, and do this as a hobby. Majority of us aren't even in the professional IT world.

Hey oldtimer! Good to see some of the OGs still around and crunching.

Drop by the discord sometime.

I didn't join [H]ardOCP until 2015 but I was folding for other team before that. From what I know the [H]orde started back when bigadv was the way to go in folding@home. Perhaps Skillz might know the origin since he joined much earlier than me.

Hmm, well, with zero work for WCG, having Einstein@home as zero share backup project seems to keep computers busy, meaning "scheduler policy works for me" and would guess it also works for the roughly 99% other Einstein@home users using "normal" home computers as long as don't try to cache multiple days of work at once.

For the roughly 1% of users running some kind of server hardware or something, I would say "run multiple BOINC clients on Einstein@home" is a trivial "tweak", compared to trying to get enough work from WCG.

Nope, it's neither about server hardware nor about deep buffers. Not at all. The E@H scheduler quirk which I am referring to can affect hosts with consumer GPUs, and it affects them even if they are running on a 0.00 days deep work buffer.

About the WCG problem of the work generator running out of work batches during a weekend: Impossible to say for us outsiders how difficult it is for them to store enough batches on a Friday. Obviously they do know the return rate of the previous days, and of the previous weekend, so at least they also have a good guess how much contributor throughput will be there over an upcoming weekend...

I believe to remember there was once a similar incident at a different project during a Pentathlon, in which a project admin for whatever reason slipped with setting up enough work batches in advance of a weekend. I may misremember though, so I refrain from mentioning the project my memory claims that this happened.

Last night's weather cost quite a bit of lost production. Right as I was going to bed power flickered. I got all but an RPi5 up but then it must have flickered again around midnight. My bedroom clock didn't reset through but I lost production on most PCs from then until 5 before I left for work. A 9950x/3080Ti didn't come up until just now with what appears to be a lost memory stick.

May or may not have been the same storm, but....

Tennesseetony was affected by this (new story link below, not spamming) Could have affected others here also, 2 that I know of.

Hmm, the only thing mentioned in original message was 1024 daily quota so no idea what type of "quirk" you're talking about.
