One of the comments killed me - "5 years later, we have 3060ti with a 100$ discount. wowee"
Good rant/points

If GPUs are almost instantly out of stock at inflated prices after a couple of months stoppage in supply, it means that the market was not anywhere close to being serviced.

If new GPUs can launch and instantly have price hikes to multiple tens of percent above MSRP, it means that the market is not being serviced.

If GPU makers can consistently market a lower-end product as a higher-end one, then it means that the market is not being serviced.

If GPUs already on the market do not lose their value over their lifespan, then it means that the market is not being serviced.

The high prices of GPUs are not due to increased prices in manufacturing*, they are not due to competition with cryptocurrency miners, nor AI farmers**, they are not solely due to scalping***. The RTX 40 series and RX 7000 series did not see price drops as the generation progressed. That leaves one reason - chronic undersupply...

until graphics cards are manufactured in enough supply to satisfy the market, things will never be fixed. We need a total output across all manufacturers of around 50 million units per year to correct things a little and the current trend is heading in the totally opposite direction.

The XT's been in stock at $720 but really anything under $800 goes quickly.
Yeah 9070 XT online stock has settled into roughly 7-10% less than 5070 ti. Regular 9070 is only about 10% less than that so value really isn’t there anymore

I got somewhat lucky at having a few Microcenters around me so nabbed a 9070 XT at 660 pre tax. Think that’s the realistic low base MSRP after the AMD partner rebates have ended.

Supply of the 5060 Ti and 5070 have been OK, btw.
Supply has been OK but getting them at NVIDIA stated MSRP is basically impossible. Also they are pretty compromised cards - 12gb for the 5070 is already too little for the power of the board, and the 16gb 5060ti is just a weird combo of decent ram but underpowered chip.

Would’ve made way too much sense to have the 5070 have 16gb and raise msrp by $50 to $600, then have a single 12gb 5060 ti model at $450 actual.

Now the 9060 XT 16gb is coming to eat the lunch of the entire 5070 and below segment

It all seems to boil down to this

Despite all the brave talk of going after market share neither AMD (nor Nvidia) seem to be interested in selling to the gaming market. It seems to remain more of an afterthought

It is 1440p ultra when you compare it to 5060 ti 8gb
It is 1080p medium when you ask the street price

"Have you tried not being poor?" should be in the advertising.

Here is post 17 in this thread -

I just saw an ASUS TUF 3080Ti on the Newegg shuffle for $2239. That should answer the question
In case anyone has forgotten how we got here. Only this time there is no stimulus check or potential mining profits helping to defray the costs.

So I visited our local (45 minutes away) Microcenter and was surprised to see a full compliment of 50 series up to the 5090 in stock on the NV side and 7900XT, XTXs, and 9070, and 9070XTs on the AMD side.

Most didn’t have prices I could see except for a 5080 which was selling for $1600 - then it made sense why they had so many in stock.

Checking the website and 5090’s are over $3K

The 9070 and 7900XT were an almost reasonable $699

I'm glad if this means people are actually refusing to pay these prices anymore.

The least desirable RX 9070 card is dropping in price from absurd to simply overpriced. A few more months.

Just gotta hope the summer heat cools down gaming GPU demand a bit... but that's probably wishful thinking if nV is cutting production for gamers since AMD/Intel can't hope to make up the difference.

AI is the worst thing to ever happen to this hobby. As if it wasn't enough that it destroys middle and working class jobs, steals and repurposes other people's art and empowers authoritarian governments. It makes my hobby price gouged out the ass as well.

Could we get into bi-modal pricing in the short term ?

High end GPU prices to remain high because nvidia diverting supply to meet chinese AI demands

But low end GPU prices to decrease over time

MLID says do not pay more than $400 for 16gb 9060xt. Prices will decrease in next few months

You know it takes people working jobs for companies like dell to ship billions of dollars of units right? And I would bet a lot you don't actually know someone that was truly replaced by AI. Don't even get me started on the crazy concept of AI disinfrancising artists either, AI has been a core part of photoshop since 2013 (content aware fill). Let alone all the streamers/youtubers using LLMs for comedic relief and for coding new screen effects and transitions.

Frankly I love AI because it made my $999 GPU be able to do things like help me solve problems at work, and make really cool high res 1 of 1 wall papers for my PCs, and memes.

These price hikes are all on AMD and Nvidia. They literally reuse all of the gaming GPU dies for Pro AI cards anyways. Its just silent price fixing. They keep raising MSRPs because they know nobody else can compete and there hasn't been such thing as effective consumer protection in a long time.

None of us know where this is all going to end up, but it certainly is not a "crazy concept" to think AI could cause rampant abuse of other peoples work and put millions of people out of work. Now in the long term might be nice to not have to work so much, but society will have to adapt quickly to the changes.
