What's with the doom and gloom?
It's not a problem of designing a motherboard for that socket. It is the very first CPU model for an entirely new socket. It will take time for ODMs/OEMs to adopt it.
(Edit,) there haven't been many quad channel memory mainboards for laptops before from which ODMs can evolve Strix Halo designs, have there?
If Strix Halo fails to move the needle in getting high end design wins for AMD, Medusa Halo will be cancelled.
NV went 512b and Lisa blinked. You know what else was incoming until it wasn't? Navi 4C.
NOooo you can't do itStill orders of magnitude over a fugly tablet going for $2K.
This again...
The ROG Ally X has a 80W.h battery, cooling engineered for 30W TDP and weighs 678g.
The ROG Ally has a 40W.h battery and weighs 608g. Chinese phone makers are getting 28W.h batteries inside 200g phones.
Battery capacity under 100Wh for laptops and gaming handhelds is mostly a decision based on cost, not weight or volume.
You know what else was incoming until it wasn't? Navi 4C.

Easy solution. Dock/handheld mode.NOooo you can't do it
Strix Halo was meant for 60watts
You are not supposed to run it in 25 watts handheld mode
🤪
The "under 100w" capacity limit is almost entirely rooted in the FAA/NTSB guidance/regulations that essentially bans mobile devices from passenger cabins if they have a 100w/h battery or larger on commercial aircraft. Physical size hasn't been an effective limitation for traditional laptops, for batteries, in a while.Still orders of magnitude over a fugly tablet going for $2K.

Most of them using exactly the same mainboard.Strix Halo failed to get more than 2 design wins on mobile devices, one of them belonging to an extremely niche "gaming tablet" market.

There's no shortage of NUC systems with Strix Halo. From a quick glance, there's:
Zotac
Ling Long
GMKTech
FAVM
SixUnited

The Halo chips and accompanying memory are having bigger physical footprint, what in turn means they require bigger cooling solution, that will require bigger enclosure. The power circuit will have to be more robust to be able to handle the spikes in the draw, as while some Youtuber can set TDP to 30W, I guess he did not do a proper power analysis to see what are the spikes, how a smaller power stage could handle them etc. Point is, this all adds to weight. Using Rog Ally X as a proxy is bad example. As you cannot replace Z1 Extreme with Halo chip and keep everything else the same. It will not fit.The ROG Ally X has a 80W.h battery, cooling engineered for 30W TDP and weighs 678g.
Nope.Still orders of magnitude over a fugly tablet going for $2K.
You do understand that a 60W part needs cooling and stuff? The ROG Ally X has a 80W.h battery, cooling engineered for 30W TDP and weighs 678g.

By all means, feel free to share sales numbers for the ROG Flow Z13 tablet surpassing the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X and Legion Go.Nope.
Create eyewear display for it and use VR controllers. Play games on a 100 inch screen! The actual tablet/base unit can stay in a well-ventilated carry bag. That would also allow using a bigger battery, possibly up to the allowed 99 Wh.The tablet looks reasonable. Either way it would be to heavy for prolonged gaming session to keep it in your hands, and if you place it on a stand then why does it matter if it is a handled or a tablet with better cooling headroom.
Its also 2 times thicker than any handheld. This thing cools up to 95W and weighs 230g, 90mm fan and mounting screws included
Have you modeled the hypothetical volume for a halo-based $1499 SRP gaming 'handheld'?By all means, feel free to share sales numbers for the ROG Flow Z13 tablet surpassing the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X and Legion Go.
At the extreme, the below is also possibleCreate eyewear display for it and use VR controllers. Play games on a 100 inch screen! The actual tablet/base unit can stay in a well-ventilated carry bag. That would also allow using a bigger battery, possibly up to the allowed 99 Wh.
What an atrocious looking device! At the extreme, the below is also possible

This X1 is $1,100 for the standard bundle with the controllers and magnetic keyboard.

Could be fun if the controllers work wirelessly and the screen can be propped up against something. Would be nice to play lying in bed. What an atrocious looking device!
The sad part is that all of this could be moot if AMD would just spin a version of Strix Point on N3P with a 16MB Mall cache for the iGPU.
It's not a problem of designing a motherboard for that socket.

No it's a laptop platform.Honestly it seems like something that was more targeted at the NUC/all-in-one market rather than the laptop market.
It's a 60W part.with TDP up to 120W
I dont see it coming to desktop, though that could be a hella cool chip if it did and was given a 170W TDP.AMD says it took four goes to get its new Strix Halo uber APU right and that included designing new CPU dies that 'put Threadripper in the palm of your hands'
It's not just a couple of Zen 5 CCDs thrown together with a new GPU die.www.pcgamer.com
They already spent a lot trying to get Strix Halo out so don't think they will spend even a penny more on something similar. They are sticking with Strix Halo and someone on overclock.net was saying that Strix Halo is coming to desktop too. I guess it must have the ability to work without on-package RAM and since EXPO 8000 is a reality on desktop, they figure it's good enough. Also, many folks must've requested them for additional features like being able to overclock both the CPU and GPU cores. That would only be feasible on a desktop where users can slap an AIO or custom liquid cooling on Strix Halo and post new records.
G.Skill releasing the DDR5-8000 128GB kit? I think that's part of the equation.
G.SKILL Announces World's First Large Capacity 128GB (64GBx2) DDR5 Overclocked Memory Kit at DDR5-8000 - G.SKILL International Enterprise Co., Ltd.
4 April 2025 - G.SKILL International Enterprise Co., Ltd., the world’s leading brand of performance overclock memory and PC components, is thrilled to announce a new high-speed memory overclock DDR5 specification with an ultra-high kit capacity – DDR5-8000 CL44 with 128GB 64GBx2 kit capacity...www.gskill.com
Desktop 128 bit bandwidth would severely constrain the GPU to the point additional power is probably pointless. I guess it would get you higher all core CPU clocks?I dont see it coming to desktop, though that could be a hella cool chip if it did and was given a 170W TDP.

What if they turn on the secret quad channel RAM switch?Desktop 128 bit bandwidth would severely constrain the GPU to the point additional power is probably pointless. I guess it would get you higher all core CPU clocks?
Yes, and fairies will carry the bits from DRAM to SoC and back...What if they turn on the secret quad channel RAM switch
But does not fit in a handheld. You also need to consider the noise output of the small fans in constrained space. This thing cools up to 95W and weighs 230g, 90mm fan and mounting screws included.
