Daily reminder - the Democrats have spent the last 15 years attempting to beef up border enforcement only for Republicans to torpedo all efforts.
You mean when they tried to kill the border wall completion and sell the unused materials for scrap, or when America was overrun by 10s of millions of new immigrants thanks to backwards leftist policies? If you call that beefing up...

Decades of open borders and catch and release put us in this mess in the first place. Every other country except America is tough on that crime.
Hardworking people that pick the food you eat, because you feel that type of labor is beneath white people, is a mess? Fuck you

Fact you won't like;
US born citizens commit crimes at a higher rate, than undocumented citizens.
Trump is a 34 times convicted felon
The congress is ripe with members with a criminal past, or such poor credit they can't get a credit card.

This might actually be wrong.

I talked with an illegal immigrant like 3 months ago who stated.. "How can Americans be so stupid?" I get healthcare for free, while my wife an American citizen has to pay a crazy amount for insurance and she can't afford the care I can.

Yes he's married to an American woman, has kids here, been here 25+ years, kids almost in college but he can never get a green card as he's black listed with a pending deportation order.

No, I mean when they repeatedly tried to spend tens of billions of extra dollars on immigration enforcement and processing.

You know, spending the money for an actually useful purpose instead of a joke of a wall.

This is of course because they affirmatively do not want to solve the problem. Republicans LOVE illegal immigration as it gives them a campaign tool for other things like tax cuts for rich people or, in this case, an authoritarian takeover.

The most recommended comments to NYTimes story on the situation in L.A. right now:

One thing about Trump: He telegraphs every punch in advance. You knew he was going to do this if you were paying attention. Doubtless the MAGA base will love it. But the irony of Trump saying "No one's going to spit on our police" when he sends in the National Guard THIS time, when he didn't send in the National Guard on January 6th and subsequently pardoned the criminals who assaulted the police then in the Capitol, is too much to bear.

Trump has no right to attack Americans. When there was an actual insurrection against the U.S. Capitol with 140 police officers badly wounded, mobs chanting to kill the vice president and the speaker, and serious damage done to the Capitol, he watched TV and did not call out the National Guard. The governor and local authorities did not request help. When Trump sends the military against blue states and targets them to block grants, and acts like American citizens are the enemy, he no longer is acting like the president of the United States. He is acting like an authoritarian tyrant ignoring laws.

Just wondering when the Congress, Senate and courts are going to start doing their jobs before you suddenly find wow is this Italy 1920’s or Germany 1933? Know history or risk repeating it. LA is standing in for Munich 1923.>

I hope I live to see the day that he faces justice for this grave crime against our nation. He is wielding these laws in ways that can only be described as radical and misguided. The question is; can anything stop him? Will these young American troops open fire when the inevitable order comes down?

An obvious dry run for military intervention to disrupt the midterms, at which the GOP will suffer a historic bloodbath if voting is not compromised.

This is an unwarranted occupation of my state by federal troops. You bet I'm opposed to that. We do indeed face an "enemy within" and he currently occupies the Oval Office.

And Trump did NOTHING to stop the defacing of our national Capitol and the brutal treatment of law enforcement during the January 6th riot and then pardoned all those convicted. That is all we need to know about his motives.

These people in the streets of LA are exercising their constitutionally protected right of free speech. They are not using weapons or force. This is in no way an insurrection! The President has no right to bring in US troops to silence the free speech rights of the populace. Sue Trump!

I wouldn't say he "jumped at the chance" to send troops against civilians. What "chance"? I'd say this administration (a) orchestrated and then (b) escalated conflict as a pretext to overstep California and put protesting citizens in the harshest possible circumstances. This is all scripted to escalate. There is no chance involved.

I agree that both sides have taken advantage of cheap immigrant labor for decades.

Hopefully Dems are now ready to approve any immigration reform measures Republicans propose

Hopefully Republicans are ready to approve bipartisan immigration reform that already passed the senate, right?

You won't get help from Democrats on anything having to do with immigration now because the administration is acting lawlessly. No point in making new laws with someone who won't follow them.

That's really the issue, isn't it? They've never really been able to define (with specifics) what exactly the "border/immigration crisis" is. Hint: it's because there really isn't a problem at all when you look at (and can understand) all the statistics.
The issue is they aren't able to be honest with what they want as it's hideously unpopular. Like @FelixDeCat they claim to have no problem with legal immigration, only illegal immigration.

So, when Democrats offer an illegal immigration crackdown in exchange for making it easier to legally immigrate that should be a no brainer, right? Nope! The problem is what Republicans actually want is no immigrants so these bills don't actually do what they want.

The funny thing is that liberalizing immigration policy would probably poll really well after being implemented (but poll very poorly beforehand), because it would provide clear and easy paths for people to follow for residency and/or citizenship, instead of the harsh morass that exists today.

In theory it means everyone gets what they want - as I said though the problem is conservatives aren't honest about what they want.

Nothing wrong with legal immigrants. They do work hard and usually strive to earn citizenship.

But you can't crash the border and just whatever willy nilly.
Stop lying, you don't support legal immigration and that's why republicans torpedo any bill that would actually fix our shitty broken immigration process.

Ding ding ding!

I seem to remember under Bush there was an agreement on immigration reform in 2005 but the Republicans themselves tanked the bill!

As McConnell would have put it "To fix immigration is a power grab by the democrats".

We had porous not open borders. Dems put forth a good solution that Trump shot down by making phone calls. When that failed Biden took too long to take action.

Even now Trump just wants to use the immigration problem to invoke the Insurrection Act. He doesn't want to fix the problem he wants to abuse people of color. He illegally deports Abrego Garcia and gives refugee status to white people over a made up claim of genocide.
