desktop is dead

yes it is! on its way out

again the only real main "option" desktop gives you in 2025 is the huge GPU brick

those monstrous gamer craptops

this is the problem and absurdity I see here with many users:
a hardcoded and outdated image of what a "top end laptop" is

basically the image you have in your head does not correspond with reality in 2025

Strix Point and Strix Halo are the real "high end" of mobiles and they are not near-parity

StxPoint no, not worth the upgrade over Phoenix
StxHalo yes, high end
9950X ~= Halo ~= 9955HX
difference is in the range of ~10% so yes, near-parity is real
main benefit of Halo = optimized low power modes bc of superior interconnect hardware

Nope, it's a fact. Go look at the noise levels and battery life in any review of a Range laptop. You're buying a partially 6nm MCM monstrosity with high pj/b interconnects in 2025 for $$$$. Not a mobile part at all. Even if you're tuning it's still a Zen 5 desktop part forced where it hardly belongs.

DTR is a niche. Hawk, Strix and Kraken are the mobile volume parts and you're talking about niche desktops with batteries killing niche desktops because it's all you can buy as a gamer kid.

And the best actually mobile part AMD makes - Strix Halo - is closer in 1T and nT to the 7900X than the 9950X3D.

Not to mention physical size, weight, and idle thermals of the chassis.

Oh, and the price. Pretty much every single thing about them is counter to the narrative he's been trying to spin here and in his "desktop is dead" thread.

It's gotten old.

even macbook air m4 is 1.6kg .... very small differences

still the lightest + fastest is rog halo 13'' at 1.2kg

anyway this debate will be 100% over when medusa comes out

~1kg mobile /w top tier desktop cpu + gpu perf close to 9700XT

About this, I have to contradict you. The problem with laptops is the fact you'll need to change the entire system while DIY users in need can upgrade some parts*. But, if you consider two completely new systems, the prices for laptops are not so different. I.e. for a similar configured desktop from the same reseller, I get 3.15K€ and that's without a Keyboard, a monitor and a mouse and I get also a not 3D version of the Ryzen 9950 while I get a full version of the 5070Ti. Same SSDs and cheapest case, low-mid range Mainboard with a 750W Power supply which is becoming the minimum there. Of course the upgrade path is what does the difference, but then it depends on how much time you plan to keep the PC, and so on.

* I know about the framework laptop but that's a very niche product at the moment.

it's impossible medusa will still have 3.5 lol that will be suicide
We already know that Medusa Point is 3.5+, and 4 in APUs straight up does not exist.

Besides, even if it actually ends up being 5, 9070XT requires 300W of power to reach its performance. Even with 2 shrinks, you are absolutely not getting this level of performance from an SoC that goes up to 120W at most and shares it with the CPU.

RDNA 5 or bust

I bet it will be close in margins let's say 10-20% diff for the big halo

also the zen6 3d uplift in fps
