I just had jury duty. Showed on Monday and they had us fill out a form stating there was a case that would run until next Friday and did we have any financial hardships. Being retired that is a big no from me. 65 of us got called. Not part of the initial 12 so had to sit there for the rest of Monday and all day Tuesday while they questioned the perspective jurors.

Tuesday was LONG day. We could not be on our phones or kindle, while the court was in session. Had to sit there all day listening to everyone telling their sob story why they could not be on the jury and answer the same questions..... They finally picked the jury at 4:00 and I got dismissed.

Yeah I could see that... I think it depends on the state but most (?) you might only get paid from your employer for one day?

Not getting paid for 4-5 days could easily be problematic for a lot of people.

I had a dentist appt and remembered that the court house was only a few blocks away so I left work early and ran over there. Went in and told the lady my story and she looked me up and said my service was ended so I was excused. I asked if she was sure and she said yep, nothing to do anymore so I walked out just as confused. I get back to the office and opened my inbox and the jury office responded a few hours ago saying I was excused!

Previous state, many years ago ...

"Do you know any officers?"

Yes, several.

"Do they ever talk about their work or cases?

Yes.

"You're excused."

--------------

Current state years ago.

I work dispatch overnight and get all kinds of calls for all kinds of cases. Since juries come up at random, there is a slight possiblity I may have taken a call or handled radio traffic about it.

"You're excused"

Every time I get a jury questionnaire in the mail, I log into the county jury site, answer their questions completely and truthfully...I always get excused from jury duty.

One of the questions here is about sitting upright for extended periods of time.

No, I can't do that. I fidget, I wobble, I twist, I turn, my back hurts, my legs hurt. I have to be able to get up and move/walk at any moment. I can't even drive for more than an hour at a time any more.

We bought my stepson a car for graduating college a few years ago and he's decided to move on from it. The car's still under our name, so we figured we'll just trade the car in, and whatever we get leftover we'll just throw that into the down or w/e. Well the car must've heard us saying we were going to unload it because yesterday it decided to give fits shifting into drive mode. I told him not to drive it and I'll mess around with it. Last night, not only was it having trouble shifting into drive mode, but wouldn't shift into sports mode. Made an appointment (still under powertrain and we have extended warranty on it) and started it up today to take to said appointment. Well the damn shifter wouldn't stay in drive mode! It kept switching from N to D on the indicator. I finally got it to stick in D mode with some considerable force, and drove it the 30 miles to the dealer to get it looked at. On top of that, the ac controls decided to quit working. It won't adjust ac fan speed, it's just stuck on high. Waiting to hear back from the dealer on what the issue is. I'm thinking software or the cable for the shifter is fubar'd somehow. Car drove fine on the highway otherwise.

Sounds like the transmission if it won't shift gears properly, hopefully not as that shit gets pretty pricey.

Speaking of car issues I have a super annoying rattling sound in my truck since about a week ago when I went to my off grid land. It seems to be coming from somewhere under the bed on the driver side. I'm hoping it's just a rock or something that somehow got in there and will eventually fall out and not something more serious.

I have my truck booked at the mechanic to check the battery drain issue so will mention it, I narrowed it down a bit to a few potential fuses/cables but it's weird as it doesn't always react the same way when I pull them. But basically I have like a 1.3 amp draw when it's sitting idle, and sometimes it's like 900ma, it varies. The truck doesn't last the night without having to plug it in or disconnect the battery so it's super annoying. Brand new battery too.

Trying to get at least another year or two out of it, so that I can pay off the mortgage as I have around 2 years left on it. Once that's paid off then I'll buy something newer like maybe an off lease or something. Vehicles are so freaking expensive now days and it's only going to get worse so may as well try to buy something newer and hopefully get 10+ years out of it.

I eventually want to build a shop and get a lift, so I can learn to work on my own vehicle, also want to learn welding so I can do body work. The biggest issue is rust due to road salt, that's really what kills vehicles.

Got a call from the dealer. They said somehow, the little red plastic cover that covers one of the battery terminals (+ or -, can't remember which) somehow came off, and got lodged onto the shift cable and is all smashed up on it. They removed it from the cable and it's working normal now. Wtheck?! He asked if anyone happened to be working on the battery or anywhere near it recently and my stepson said no, but got the oil changed about a month ago. Pretty crazy. They said they had to order some deflector part or something like that for the fan and it won't be here till next week sometime but we should be good otherwise.

*Rant* My Galaxy A54 got an update to One UI 7 and android 15 I believe. Now when I hold down the power button to restart or shutdown the phone it brings up Gemini AI which I will never use. Whoever thought that was a brilliant idea needs flogged. So tired of this AI crap being forced down our throats.

Got to work on my first shift, opened up all my applications, then within less than an hour all the screents started to go haywire then all black. FFS. Had to force reboot and start all over. It's weird because that's the 2nd time now, and it only seems to do it at work. I had the PC on at home for a full week and it was fine.

Checked event viewer and it seems dwm.exe is crashing, and upon googling it seems to be a common issue. I suspect there's more to it though given it's not happening at home.

Called my boss about it and asked if I can just go work from home if it does it again and he agreed. Also got him to order some new cables to see if somehow that's the issue.

It's a pita having to start over everytime that happens so hopefully we can solve this once and for all...

Flight from Osaka to Hong Kong was delayed due to mechanical problem for 2 and a half hour. Of course, we missed our connection flight home from Hong Kong to Dallas. As thing does cascading down, we also missed our flight from Dallas to Austin.

I shouldn't complain too much but Cathay Pacific did book us flights.. not one, but two. Instead of direct flight to Dallas from Hong Kong, they booked us a flight to SFO, then from SFO to Dallas. Each with lay over of 3 to 4 hours.

They couldn't helped me with flight from Dallas to Austin, so I had to paid $600 with AA. The wife was not happy.

I posted a screenshot of my home grown captcha to Grok and asked it to solve it and it did. And I thought I was being clever with my captcha format... it basically generates like 20 different captchas and mixes them together, but one of them stands out more because of the colour, but all colours are randomized. It was still able to pickup on that.

There is a fine line between making a captcha hard for bots but still easy enough for humans.

Ex captchas:

Also I think my forum may have gotten some kind of weird attack too because I noticed that it shows "Most users ever online was 1964 on 11 May 2025 23:42".

I only noticed that recently and the logs don't go back that far. Normally there's only a dozen or so users and it's most likely all search bots.
