I wonder if this parade was a significant miscalculation on Trump's part. I think he truly believed that having a parade on his birthday would result in MAGA fanatics flocking to it and adoring him, because he confused bigots banding together under a common-ish cause with things that friends do.

It reminds me of a scene from 'A Christmas Carol' when Scrooge is being shown the effect that his death has on his world, and he's shown his stock exchange 'friends' who consider for a moment going to his funeral, but since there wasn't anything in it for them (ie. an inheritance or at least a free lunch), they said they'd "think about it", then no-showed.

I didn’t watch any of it for obvious reasons but I heard it was terrible, which is not surprising.

Outside of a very small number of people the US military does not teach its members how to march. It teaches them how to fight. Marching is a stupid waste of time.

Eh... At least in the air force, you absolutely learned to march. Idk what I watched last night but they looked like hammered dog shit out there. Like 'week 1 of basic' dog shit. Every MTI I was around would have had that whole flock of sheep eating grass for hours.

To this point the highly coordinated spectacles put on by like Russia and North Korea take months to prep for and the troops involved spend a lot off that time doing nothing but practicing for it. A bunch of random active duty guys you just assign to it one day are gonna look like shit even if their heart is in it...and from what I saw it was not. Also I guess everybody lost their dress uniforms or the admin decided that camo looked more "warfightery".

I think "learned" in the past tense is operative here. Like anything if you don't practice it regularly proficiency declines. Do I think the Airborne and Green Berets spend several days a week (a month, or even a year) drilling for this kind of thing? No, I do not.

Learning how to march is part of basic training for nearly all military members across all branches. It really isn't a waste of time, as it teaches discipline and teaches the military members teamwork and how to fluently, in sync, move as one unit. You wouldn't know that though by the imbarrassing performance during this parade from the video clips I saw.

Army band actually played 'Fortunate Son'? Don't show Trump the lyrics, else the Greenland base is going to get a new band.

Out of sync marching hurt my eyes, just some random bros out for a walk

You are correct, but the clips I saw, the members marching in the parade looked to be barely out of basic training (young men/women), but their marching skills shows otherwise. Maybe they where fresh new military members, still new to marching LOL! I have to say, I haven't marched since I was in the miltary over 3 decades ago, and could have done a better job.

In all seriouness, it looked to be that they didn't care about the parade, just like most of the country. So they didn't care to put in any effort.

Supposedly one of his "supporters" took away the spotlight with a murder rampage.

The "shelter-in-place" advice didn't serve to much damage the "No Kings" turnout, which was impressively massive.

The birthday parade cost us $35 million. I spent nearly 30 years actually trying to save money, hoping to raise my GS salary through those efforts. I resent that my fellow taxpayers were made to pay for this fiasco, and that our men and women in uniform had to participate in it.

When the morning announcements turned to the murders and victims in Minnesota, I heard nothing from the White House. Somebody told me in the afternoon that Trump had made some remark: "It was just terrible!"

We still have 3 and a half years to go with this Criminal. The key that could shorten the misery a little bit is winning the midterms in 2026.

I know I'd said this in posts going back 10 years: "Trump is the most disgusting person to appear on TV since the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games." There is something seriously wrong with people who support Trump, and I don't apologize for saying it. In this country, that's a helluva lot of sickos.

35 million for that was the biggest waste of money I’ve ever seen for a government event that lasted several hours. It was seriously the most pathetic parade I’ve ever seen and I’m comparing it to local city parades. If the point was to show Americas strength, I suspect we will be attacked and taken over within the week by our adversaries, that’s how weak it made us look.

I keep hearing that the parade was to honor the Army’s 250th birthday, NOT to soothe Trump’s ego…in which case, I’m sure we’ll be seeing a similar parade come November for my beloved Corps’ 250th…right? Right?

Actually, the AI web-search results said "between 25 and 45 million", so I chose the median in my remark.

We've got to win the midterms. The Sociopath must be expunged.

Every time I see the ceremonial marching stuff that various national armies do on special occasions (North Koreans, Russians, Greeks...), I'm reminded of John Cleese and The Ministry Of Silly Walks. I'm sure there's a valid reason for it - disclipline, confidence, etc - but it just asks to be set to inappropriate music on Youtube.

The best clip was of the Sherman(?) tank rolling down the street and the crowd was so silent/non-existent that you could hear the squeak of the tracks on the tank.
Haha, my SO and MIL commented on that, asked 'uh why is it so squeaky'... i basically said 'they always sound like that, it's just not usually so quiet otherwise that it's all you hear'

What a pathetic waste of money, anyone who believes this was anything other than a trump birthday parade is an idiot.

At least in the navy you learn to march in boot camp and then essentially never do it again. It would have been hilarious to watch the crew of my ship try to march somewhere in formation.
