Key text from Lisa Su's statement

AMD CEO: We’re Designing a Full Roadmap of Gaming Chips for Xbox

Moving forward, AMD will go beyond building custom chips for Xbox consoles to designing a full roadmap of gaming optimized chips. Combining the power of Ryzen and Radeon for consoles, handhelds, PCs, and the cloud.

These look like new chips in partnership with directions from Microsoft

& the stress on AI indicates RDNA 4 or RDNA 5, I guess

Well... if MS does end up doing any other chips, I would expect it to work the same way. It does make some sense to do a handheld chip and also a 'desktop' one too.
MS is making one box console (price anywhere from $500 to $1000)

The first party handheld is 'essentially' cancelled

You will get lots of stuff like rog xbox ally. Need z3 extreme kind of chips for that.
I am not sure if this is a recent agreement between AMD & MS as there has been no leak of z3 extreme so far

There is the supposed Xbox back compat hardware support I guess. I doubt that was in the original roadmap.

I dunno this is a little confusing. We will get the details in due time I guess.

If they really did announce support for Xbox games that would be news to me…

They were very careful with their wording in the announcements and stuff. The upcoming handheld stuff was for running PC games only. The devices themselves were running a gaming optimized version of Windows 11. Did something change? Does anyone have a link?

The products that use MS's Semi Custom chip will be able to use it both as a Windows machine and as an XBox.

This is incorrect. What you were seeing is a different front end for Windows. They never stated you could play Xbox games. They were pretty clear on that subject, which is why I was confused why it was being brought up. The interface will actually become an optional front end for more devices later on, even to DIY. It is still only for PC gaming, however.

PS6 might go for zen 6 + RDNA 5+ (i.e. pull in a few features from RDNA 6)
It should be noted that Sony are not passive in their collaboration with AMD.

If something ends up in a Playstation SoC before PC dGPUs and APUs it's because Sony specifically worked with AMD on these features.

So it's not so much pulling in features from Gen n+1, it's adding features to Gen n, that later end up in Gen n+1.

This actually explains a lot about b0rked features in some AMD GPU generations following console releases.

The features were custom designed for specific chips with specific feature sets, rather than a general µArch family scaling to multiple dies, so mismatches are to be expected.

Not the upcoming ally x handheld, yes that is just a slimmed front end on regular old windows. the “other” next Xbox devices / silicon.

Sarah bond - “Together, we’re delivering deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay, and AI-powered experiences - grounded in a platform designed for players, not tied to a single store or device, and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library.”

Lisa su - “Moving forward, AMD will go beyond building custom chips for Xbox consoles to designing a full roadmap of gaming optimized chips. Combining the power of Ryzen and Radeon for consoles, handhelds, PCs, and the cloud. And we're doing it all with backwards compatibility, so gamers can access their favorite titles across platforms, delivering on a promise to both gamers and developers.”

These are both referring to hardware after the z2. Maybe im misinterpreting but this implies some hardware support for xbone/series libraries on some devices. Maybe just the Xbox, but if oems are involved what is an Xbox? Just a console or could it be a laptop, future handheld etc?

Does that 2x RT perf use current RDNA4 perf as a baseline? I'm asking because FSR4 Redstone and Direct RT 1.2 will bring some perf boost in the near future. So 2x of THAT would be even more surprising.
That should be a favourable comparison if anything, DXR 1.2 SER/OMM is supported with SW emulation on RDNA4 while RDNA5 has HW accel, and NRC/Ray denoising should be much faster on RDNA5 thanks to FP4 support.
