A warning that white collar jobs loss of 10 to 20 percent is imminent due to AI.

But what about further into the future? What will the world look like when few people will be mended to think?

The problem as I see it is that AI in our world is privately held, privately developed and deployed for enriching the already obscenely rich and that the average person day by day becomes less and less of value except as a tool. How long will that be true? Are androids beyond AI’s capacity to perfect?

Seems to me people will have to vote to socialize the economy and end the accumulation of individual wealth in favor of increasing the common good.

We know the definition of insanity is doing more of the same. I think it is time for the corporate office to be run by different principles.

What do you think the future requires for the good of the many?

Elon and the other Oligarchs want you to have more children to work the mines and repair the robots of their children.

I see all those kinds of jobs as android replaceable. I think also that carbon based workers can be grown in a vat programmed to specific tasks, not necessarily using human DNA.

These AI-pushers are so full of themselves. Your crappy AI that confidently spews wrong answers 50% of the time isn't replacing anyone anytime soon. Just a whole lot of slop from business owners who got all upset that workers got a modicum of power during a period of low unemployment.

This is good news. More people going into the trades means more housing and better infrastructure.

AI companies have made a lot of big claims about AI doing knowledge work, but so far very little of it has actually proven effective.

Who should be afraid of AI is artists of all types. Images and video that AI can make right now is on par to most corporate artists. In a few more years they will probably surpass human ability altogether and be capable of pumping out tailor made videos in seconds with minimal human interaction. Written work still takes more human intervention but can reduce the time it takes to write a complex long work, say an instruction manual, from weeks or months to a few hours.

If we're aiming to make people materially poorer by destroying the white collar economy with voodoo AI bs, we're not going to have to worry about hiring electricians people won't have the money to hire.
They'll have plenty of money, they'll just have to sweat for it. Instead of marketing, SEO optimization, and app's to track your toenail trimming schedule, we'll have plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and painters. The nation will once again be populated by capable men and women doing the jobs that made America great.

I can smell the sawdust already!

It’s further along for software than you might expect — some of the tools available now are easily better than a junior dev. It’s not going to replace everyone or senior/staff level engineers just yet but the days of a CS degree meaning a guaranteed good job are over. I make good use of a certain set of AI tools daily and get a large productivity boost out of it.

You have no clue what engineers actually do, do you. If you did you’d know that researchers, scientists and engineers are what made America great. Many of us know perfectly well how to do electrical work, plumbing, auto mechanical work etc because it’s not rocket science but we do more complicated shit all week that moves technology and the sum of human knowledge forward and just want to pay some guy to get it done.

For some of us, the only reason we hire people like that is because we don't have time to do it ourselves, we're too busy with our jobs and the minutia of life.

I've done plenty of sweating, I don't need to do it even more to justify my ego to my ego.

I've actually worked with several engineers, but those aren't the folks going to get replaced by AI. Though AI will eventually be integrated into the process.
The simple reality is that if your job can be done by AI that's going to happen if we stay on the current path.

No hate at all. The trades are a great job where good people can make a very respectable living. If you take the time to work at a few of them you'll never have to call "the guy" to fix whatever is wrong with your home.

So white collar isnt a respectable living, good to know.

Wonder if you had the same attitude while automation and offshoring decimated blue collar jobs in the US.

Apparently you do not realize that mass movement into the trades would cause wages in them to plummet.

If AI can replace a job then I’m all for it as again, the purpose of technology is 100% unemployment. It only seems capable of that at the extreme margins at the moment.

Perfectly happy to use the money from my well-paying advertising-adjacent job that I got after earning an advanced STEM degree to pay someone else to do manual labor so I can enjoy my free time. Nothing wrong with calling someone who has more expertise and practice to fix something.

Heck, Durkheim wrote about this in The Division of Labor in Society over 125 years ago. As societies becomes more advanced, people become more specialized and have to work together.

If you similarly denigrated construction jobs he would tell you that you’re out of touch and that’s why Trump won.

It’s only acceptable for conservatives to sneer at other people’s job choices.

It is literally how we have escaped the Malthusian paradox - improvements in efficiency largely driven by specialization.
