Hello,
I've been looking for an answer to this for over a year and can only find people with the same problem but no solution.
I have a windows 10 computer, intel I9-11900K and ASUS prime mobo, not overclocked. I have had this problem with 2 video cards, an nvidia 2060 and an nvidia 4060. I have dual monitors, which is where the problem comes up.
To help save power and monitor life, I have the power settings set up to lock the computer after 30 minutes and shut off the screens. Up until about 2 years ago I never had any problems with this, over the last 20 yrs of using windows.
The problem is that when I wake up the monitors, sometimes only my secondary monitor wakes up but it doesn't show the login prompt so it knows it's the secondary monitor. The primary monitor doesn't wake up. If I use the power button on either monitor, sometimes it will force into single monitor mode on the secondary monitor. Sometimes however, the primary monitor will eventually wake up but windows is frozen and won't show the login prompt.
I do NOT have the main system going into sleep mode or hibernation.
It's been getting worse, to the point where I really thought it was either the video card or the monitors so I changed almost everything. I switched between DVI, HDMI, and displayport connections on the monitors and video card. I replaced the 2060 with a 4060. I changed cables. I even ended up buying a new primary monitor going from a 30" IPS to a 30" OLED. Nothing changed and it kept getting worse. I did a registry hack to remove all unused monitor profiles. I uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers. I tried both gamer and production nvidia drivers. I used the nvidia driver cleaner utility. I swapped ports where the cables for primary and secondary monitors.
Nothing has helped. So now I just have a screensaver set to blank screen, but I'm still slowly killing the monitors and wasting electricity. Anyone have any solution?
Oh yes... My wife has a windows 11 laptop and it seems to have a very similar problem when plugged into a thunderbolt docking station and a nice 24" secondary monitor. Sometimes when waking up the laptop it won't turn on the laptop screen and only wakes up the secondary monitor, and sometimes appears to hang the computer so it's unresponsive. Any thoughts? This should be simple, I've used this exact same multi-monitor setup for about 13 years now and it only started doing this a couple of years ago and finally got to the point where it happens every single time I wake up the monitors to log back in.
