First, my specs:

A64 4000+ CPU
A8N32-SLI motherboard
2x1GB 3200 XMS memory
2x 7900 GT video
Audigy 2 ZS audio
Enermax Noisetaker 600W PSU
2-WD Cavalier 7200 SE IDE HDD
Win XP (SP2)
Full Tower case with 4 case fans

I have had this machine running very stable for the past couple of months. I noticed that Nvidia had updated their chipset drivers to v6.86, so I downloaded and installed. Before I installed them though, I uninstalled the v6.85 chipset drivers through Control Panel, went into Safe Mode and used Driver Cleaner 3 to remove any remnants, then rebooted and installed. Everything went well.

I played FEAR - no problems. I played NFS-MW - no problems. I played Quake 4 - no problems. I played NASCAR Racing 2003 - problem! It seems that if I am racing and decide to hit the Pause or Esc keys to momentarily stop the game and then hit the same key again to resume racing, my fps with stutter and drop, I'll get a high-pitched squeal from the speakers, then a lock-up. Then the BSOD appears with the dreaded:

STOP: 0x0000009c (0x........etc., etc.)

I'll do a reboot and everything is fine again unless I play NASCAR 2003 and pause it while racing. It is the only time that this occurs and it's driving me nuts. I know that things could be worse when it comes to this error code but I can't figure the cause. I uninstalled the 6.86's and went back to the 6.85's without any luck. I uninstalled again and reinstalled without adding the "IDE SW" driver without any success. I'm real close to just biting the bullet and doing a total clean reinstall of Windows.

Anyone have any suggestions on this one? BTW, my voltages are good and fan speeds appear to be normal. One other question, though. My stock CPU fan speed is in the 1500RPM range. Is that normal, and if not, how do I adjust it? Thanks.

I received that same error, and it turned out to be that my NF4 northbridge was overheating because the chipset fan on the nb heatsink had stopped spinning. I have not received the error since I fixed the fan.
