Actually in my pockets I can tell the golden dollar apart from a quarter. You couldnt the old susan b anthony dollar coins though. I'd actually love to have a dollar coin in real circulation! I think we should drop the pennies and save some money too

The Golden dollar coins were made with the same diameter and weight as the Susan B. Anthony dollars, so they're accepted by vending machines, turnstiles, etc.

I never heard that information about Ted Kennedy, but it doesn't surprise me -- fat piece of crap that he is. Thanks, Ted -- back to your bottle!

When I was living in Europe, it was awesome to have coins instead of bills. France has the equivalent of a $4 coin (along with $2 and $1), and it's just so nice to pull out a changepurse instead of having to fiddle with coins and bills.

The main advantage to having coins, from the government's perspective, is that they last an average of 30 years as opposed to bills which last about 18 months.

If I am not mistaken, and please somebody help me out here, that in some subway and transit stations, they give susan b's out because it is easier to drop a dollar coin in a slot than 4 quarters or the annoying 'in-out' "brrr" sound when a machine tries to read your crumpled up dollar.

I remember reading about the reason for 1$ coins, and the above was stated. Anyone know a subway that is using them? NY perhaps?

kind of like stamps, how many are printed just for collectors? Thats about .32 cents profit for the U.S. government per stamp.

kranky, spending the "golden dollar" coins is not nearly as much fun as the Susan B's I used to intentionally get them in change from the stamp machines just so I could see the looks people would give me (Ever pay admission to a keg party with dollar coins?)

Am I the only one who thinks it's a crock that Sacajewea is on the front of the new coin? Who the hell came up with that one? She wasn't even an American and I doubt she cared one bit about this county. If they wanted a woman so badly, why not choose someone who was a real leader? I can think of several off the top of my head that would have been much better choices (Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Elenor Roosevelt, etc.). PC pisses me off.

Dollar coins tend to wear out pockets faster.... So soon, when a person asks you for a nickel, you can just shake your leg

We should get rid of both pennies and dollar bills which would decrease costs to the treasury.

I still haven't gotten one of the new dollar coins yet as change.

They say that according to experience in Canada, it will take about 3 years until we see them in wide circulation. I'm not sure why I see the new quarters so quickly but never see a dollar coin.

Of course, Canada has had them for >10 years. Why is the US so slowwwww to change....

They aren't allowed to take them because people working in the cafeteria are so stupid they can't tell the difference between a coin dollar and a quarter when giving back change.

From the US Treasury:

Question:I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

Answer:The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 102. This is now found in section 392 of Title 31 of the United States Code. The law says that: "All coins and currencies of the United States (including Federal Reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal Reserve banks and national banking associations) . . . shall be legal-tender for all debts, public and private, public charges, taxes, duties and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal law mandating that a person or organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.

They weren't meant to be collector items, they want everyone to use them cuz it costs 30x more for them to print and re-print dollar bills due to wear and tear then to have one coin which they won't have to remake.

Hey Pepsi:

If they were to get rid of the $1 bills, what the hell are Americans supposed to give strippers, a damn 5? Either that or I suppose the girls could get creative where they keep their huge bag for carrying around a bunch of coins.

There was a show on counterfitting and currency in general on PBS a few years ago. They mentioned the amount of money the treasury expends printing dollar bills every year, it was in the neighboorhood of 485million (say ~.5billion). The average life of a paper dollar is 6months, the average life of a coin is over 30 years. Coins cost something like 2-3times as much to mint as to print a dollar. Over the long term the savings to the government of doing away with the dollar bill would be a LOT of freaking money. The question is will the american public accept the switch. I know I don't carry coins....

I've got an unopened roll of golden dollar coins. Pretty cool, though I know that there are thousands of people with them. My dad worked at Wal-Mart at the time that they were distributing them. They had specific orders to NOT sell rolls of the coins. But they did anyway.

The dollar coin will fail untill they do like Canada did / does with the dollar bill and two dollar bill, take them out of circulation. This would force people to use the dollars, and open a spot for the coins.

loons are cool ...

i like the $1 coins ... also they should drop the whole pennies thing all together ... they are uselsss .... they should make the US currency setup like the Canadian one ... they have the right idea ... (except that they have pennies too) ...

also ... since i am comparing US to CA ...

we should get rid of all the old obselete measurements .... no more Miles and Feet and inches and Farenheit ... those are all gay

US should become Celsius, M, L, and G ...

the imperial Measurments are FOR ME TO POOP ON!

Tell them to take your money, or screw off, and you're not going to buy food there anymore. That's rediculous. You don't know how many times I've walked into like 7-11 with a giant handful of change. You think they're not going to take it? Right. I'd make them take it. If they refused, I would make like I was going to walk out with my food in hand. Then they'd take it.

Btw, I like them too. They're cool. And you can easily tell them from a quarter, quarters have serrated edges.
