I know someone who majored in philosophy... ended up doing social services work. He then moved on to work in IT and is raking it in ($80k-$90k).

It's not all worthless. A lot of people don't use what they majored in. I have a revered engineering degree, which hasn't gotten me anything. I wouldn't mind doing something else in fact.

Except maybe religion...

I would say it's just the worthlessness...but how much you are paying for that worthlessness. I know somebody that goes to a college in NYC and pays $15,000+ a semester for a major in....theater. <facepalm> Congrats, you've set yourself up for a lifetime of paying off student loans.

you must suck at your engineering degree if you haven't done anything with it, that or you picked the wrong major and just don't like it

Some of those aren't worthless, necessarily. Some places only require a degree, any degree, and that you demonstrate your skills and they will hire you. So if you were able to major in something that interests you AND you got a job (even if it isn't as a philosopher or whatever), it's all that much better.

Well, the major might be useless, but the name of the school on the degree may not be. I've seen many English majors find jobs working for big Wall Street firms. Or maybe they just use their high GPA to get into graduate or professional school.

While it is obvious a degree doesn't guarantee anything, I do agree on some points made and the article is funny.

"I took many philosophy classes and it involved reading and smoking a shit pile of weed." LOL, at the N64 controller turned piece

Music therapy is a major? and you have to go to college to study Religion?

Film is not bad if you learn how to make good movies.

How do you think ministers, preachers, and pastor become ministers, preachers, and pastors? They go to school. Not only to study religion but also how to effectively communicate.

Religion/Theology majors become pastors, missionaries, church staff, or those working for non-profit christian organizations (eg. World Vision, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Urban Ministry, etc.). For these people, their success isn't measured by money. And of course, film majors can either work in movie studios, animation studios, commercial/marketing companies. The rest I agree with.

you have to go to college to get the degree in religion, which probably involves more than reading a bible or something.

a friend of a friend has a film degree.

he teaches film.

the friend has an english degree...got it just for the purpose of teaching english classes at the university she went to..

whatever works, i guess, as long as it works

I can't go to the page at work, but I whole-heartedly expect Liberal Arts to take top honors as worthless.

Good stuff.

Go into a communications class on any given day and it?ll smell like dried semen and booze. Reason being, communications is the major for anyone who wants to graduate, but doesn?t want to stop getting totally wasted on weekdays.

My passing thought on communicating....and history.....and kind of a non-sequitur:
Better documentation of daily life. Imagine making the study of archaeology another useless major. Rather than having future generations piss away time figuring out what other humans were doing, just keep a record.

God, I can't imagine what horrible conclusions they may draw if they come upon ancient archives of Youtube comments, or Myspace, without the proper context. They'd probably invent time travel so they could retroactively exterminate the species.
In any case, they'd probably wind up Rickrolling themselves at some point.

English Lit:
Therefore, you?ll most likely end up landing an entry level position at a random small company, or showing up to your interview and being raped repeatedly by a group of masked men.

If you?re lucky, you?ll have an uncle who can get you a job as a production assistant on CSI Miami, where your time will be spent making coffee runs and finding whores that will let David Caruso pee on them.

LOL

So long as the anecdotes are flying, my aunt majored in art history and she works in software publishing. Makes a good living too, from what I've seen. My Uncle works in the same industry, but as a software producer. He majored in music. Makes six figures. The article is clearly meant as humor anyway, or at least shouldn't be taken seriously. I think the better advice would be to be smart. And I don't mean make smart decisions, I mean actually be innately intelligent. This isn't something you can acquire, so what I'm basically saying is, if you're an intelligent person you'll probably be able to find a good job regardless of your major, if you play the game intelligently. If you're a person of average or below average intelligence, though, then getting a major that guarantees high pay is probably the route. If you are uncreative, unintelligent, and unexceptional, you very much need credentials to make yourself worthwhile.

And I could spend the rest of my life enjoying the "company" of cheap prostitutes.
My life would consist of lots of debt, and it would likely be shortened by an excessive concentration of STD's.

Both are simply impractical things to do. Fine, they're enjoyable pursuits. But neither is all that practical.

Those degrees left out important jobs: Learn the major so that you can eventually teach it. It's a self-perpetuating thing that way, allowing you to teach future classes, so that they may graduate, and some can continue the cycle, like a frog fertilizing a huge clutch of eggs in the hopes that 0.04% of them will survive to produce another generation.

What a terrifically dumbass comparison.
