Damn, I feel so inadequate with all of you guys putting up massive numbers!

Anyway, did a pretty relaxing 6 miles in the horrible humidity this morning. I still feel sticky. D:

+ 23 miles for me. Ran a 5K on Sunday in a new PR of 16:24. Got my finishing photo on the cover of the local paper too (I think because I graduated with the photographer for the paper, nice!)

Very nice!

The only thing that would be inadequate is if you stopped going out and running. As long as you're doing what you can do, it's all good! Of course, if feeling inadequate pushes you to go out and improve more, then maybe it's not so bad...

Heh, yeah, thanks! I do feel motivated to do more, I just need to take it slow so I don't get injured.

Wow, cool race. Did you run 17 consecutive miles or multiple stages?

Multiple stages...similar to our Texas Independence Relay. It's all about speed - you're going to have a faster time if you run 5 3 mile legs (ok that's only 15 miles) than running 15 miles in a row. With a bit of rest and sleep inbetween.

Split into 3 separate legs.. my race distance was actually 16.7 miles (the rest comes from warm-up jogs prior to stretching the last couple days)

The race featured 36 legs overall, and the 12 runners cycled through in order 3 times. To cover for my team's missing runner, 3 of our more fit runners covered 1 extra leg each.

sleep? what sleep?!?
I slept about 2.5 hours Friday night / Saturday morning. Just too much going on, even when my van was the inactive/off van.

lol. That's what I hear happens...you're lucky to get some tiny bit of shuteye here and there. It's a fun team building event though.

I struggled through 5 miles this morning. My calf, actually I think it is more my achilles tendon (whatever it is that runs up the back of my leg, below the big calf muscle) got really, really tight part way through and I slowed to a crawl. It's been happening quite a bit recently; very odd, because afterwards I can rub it down with a bit of tiger balm and it does not bother me until I run again. Not sure what to do. :hmm:

Anyway.

Are you talking about the tissue right behind your ankle bones above your heel? That is your achilles. If I had to venture - are you a big forefoot runner? (Landing on the ball of your foot) The achilles can oftentimes get strained that way.

Looking at pictures, I think the achilles tendon goes all the way up to the calf muscle, so the white part in this picture:

Hard to say exactly. I have never done a barefooted run, so that's not it, unless I have started to unconciously change how my foot is impacting the ground.

KT

Edit: maybe I'm reading that picture wrong. :hmm:

No the picture is correct - it does run up that high. You don't have to be running barefoot to be a forefoot striker - just watch how you land. Have you been doing anything else that's put added stress to your achilles? Running bleachers/stairs? Lots of climbing? Lots of uphills during your runs?

Not that I'm aware of. Been doing pretty much the same thing I always do, but I guess I will just need to be aware of how I am striking the ground next time I run. Either that or something has gone awry with my shoes and it's throwing me off.

Thanks for the help, I'll see how it goes on Saturday/Sunday when I do my next run. If it still bugs me after that I think I'll go see my physiotherapist.

Note that RB isn't saying not to land on your forefoot (I think, correct me if I'm wrong RB), just that it could be the source of some strain. You might just need some extra rest. Granted, if landing more on your heel works for you, nothing wrong with that.

Right, fair enough. I'll probably rest until Sunday, then run in the morning and pay extra attention to see what I may be doing differently. So odd, because I went for a walk at lunch and did not feel a thing. :\

When walking, you are very likely to be landing on your heels, and the shock you have to absorb is much lower in general.

Also, you can try to pay attention to how you land while running, but it's often not easy to be sure, especially in padded shoes. Sometimes slo-mo video is the only way you can really tell. I land on my heels even when I think I'm not.

Yeah, good points. I've always thought I land on my heels, but who the heck knows.

Correct sir Not saying not to, but just trying to pinpoint how the injury occurred. Heel-toe and Achilles injuries happen, but think there was some other trigger causing it.

Lack of mileage is killing me. I feel ready to go and am stuck working long hours every day while my power plant is shut down for it's first outage in 2 years. I need the money so it's good in that regards, but no running is killing my morale.

39 this week, the first taper week. I really did not feel like going out and doing my lsd today but it ended up going ok. It's getting a bit nippy here (11C). I've got lots of nice aches and pains and 2 weeks of taking it easier before the big day should be just perfect I think

Edit: lol, not too long ago 39 was crazy far for me. Now I call it "tapering"

Hey all, first run since pacing at Virgil Crest last weekend. I learned that hills are my bane, so that's what I'm working on these days. I did 4 miles, all hilly. Some of it at 10% grade, not much for some people but plenty for me.
