MGGP - You finished, and mission accomplished - well done!
Caveman - Yea, I know about those early morning runs man, I forced myself to run in the mornings for the last 3 weeks and it totally paid off. Sorry to hear your race didn't go as well as you wanted, but props for finishing.
Allies - Holy goddamn sir, that is incredible! I just saw your results, you finished 10th in 2:45:11. Very well done! (BTW, you may want to email the race directors - they have you listed in the 45-49 age category by mistake )
Scorch and
Mega - Awesome races guys; well done!

I ran the Vancouver Marathon today, and had a very good race. I was well awake, hydrated and had the system flushed before starting. Conditions were perfect: 10 C (50 F), cloudy with sunny breaks and no wind.
I tried to be reserved at the start. Came across a guy around 4k. I asked him his pace and he said 2:40, so we agreed to work together. We were a little hot through 10k (37:30), but feeling very relaxed.
The female front runners came up on us around 12k coming down off an overpass, so we traded the lead for a few km. Still ahead of pace at 16km (10mi) at 1 hour even.
Still strong going into Stanley Park (19km) but the women started to pull away (one was a rabbit, and dropped out). Feeling a bit fatigued at the half (around 1:21). Realized I would be in for some pain on the second half. One big hill, and then downhill out of the park along the beach. Form still good. My race buddy tells me he might have to drop for a shit soon.
Really starting to struggle over Burrard Bridge (29km) as it is about 100ft climb. Relaxed a bit on the downside, but quads are starting to tighten. My buddy pulls away at 30km.
Through Kitsilano, I bonked pretty hard. I had been alternating gels, Gatorade and water at almost every station but the Wall got me. Focused on the next tree, next corner, next spectator to make it through. 32km (20mi) at 2:04:45.
My buddy dropped to make a pit stop at 31km. I reached the turnaround to head back towards downtown, and just past 33km he blew past me again:Q.
I held my form together and managed to get that second wind around 35-36km. Calves are tight now in addition to my quads, and my feet are getting sore. Managed to feed off the crowd's energy and actually caught the second place female runner around 37km.
Grinded it out back over the Burrard Bridge (40km). Slowly dialed up the pace to extract what I had left. Not enough for a sprint, but I was up a gear or so at the finish.
Finished in
2:50:07 (19th overall, 3rd in my age category 25-29).
Everything came together perfectly today. Would have been nice to be closer to 2:45, but I think I need more mileage next time around to make that happen. Considering I could barely run back in January, I'm happy to have battled to make it here.
Despite walking around for a while this afternoon and using the Stick, I can barely walk down a set of stairs. LOL. Worth it though.
