Ran in the Run to Remember Half-Marathon in Boston on Sunday. Finished in 1:49 which put me at 1064 out of 4033 overall and 263 out of 589 in my division. I really need to train for these early morning races. Again, I found myself sprinting the last couple of miles as I didn't push it enough in the beginning/middle of the race.

Good course, running thru downtown Boston into Cambridge to Harvard Sq(even passed my house) and back thru the Boston Common and downtown crossing. Kind of funny seeing all of the hobos in downtown crossing cheering us on. Lots of butterfaces on the course though. Saw some nice butts but was disappointed when I caught up and got a glance.

Had my appetite afterwards this time but since it was pretty warm drank a whole lot and have been pissing all day/night.

13.1 for the half-marathon and another 2.5 for jogging to the subway station, warm-ups and then jogging to Chinatown after the race to go grocery shopping.

Good race Caveman! How did you adjust your fluid intake and pacing compared to the full marathon? I'm planning to run a half later in the summer to prep for a fall marathon.

Thanks! Being only a couple of weeks after running a marathon, not being able to train the last couple of weeks as well as I'd like and only getting five hours of sleep, I think I did alright.

My goal was to be around a 8:30 pace and I beat that, so I'm happy.

In preparing for the marathon, running 13 miles isn't too taxing now, so I knew I didn't have to pace things as carefully. I use a Garmin 305 so I'm able to monitor my pace and heart rate which can be a good and bad thing. I learned from the marathon that I paid too attention to heart rate too much and tried to keep my bpm below 170.

This time, I decided not to pay attention to my heart rate and be more concerned with my pace and how I felt. I knew I was going to run fast for the first couple of miles due to the pack and adrenaline. B/c I knew the distance wasn't that difficult, I figured that by the time I wore down, I would be close to the end.

So my splits were:

Mile Pace Avg HR
1 8:03 169
2 8:33 179
3 8:21 175
4 8:30 174
5 8:23 176
6 8:17 175
7 8:15 177
8 8:26 178
9 8:44 175
10 8:43 179
11 8:49 178
12 8:22 179
13 7:49 183
13.1 5:28 192
Total 8:23 177

As you can see, I did tire out at mile 9 but mile 12 brought us back into Boston where all the spectators got me going again.

In regards to water, I usually don't bring water unless I'm going more than 7 miles. So similar to the marathon, with water stations every two miles. For the first several water stations I grabbed a cup and sipped about half and spilled the rest on my neck. But when it got to around mile 8, the sun came out and I could feel the heat. So, for the last couple of water stations, I grabbed one cup of gatorade and one cup of water slowed down just enough to drink them both.

Yea, I can see that you tired a bit around 9 miles, but you started well. You dropped quite a bit of time off on that last mile - woah.

I guess in the half marathon, you don't have to worry about hitting the wall as long as you aren't ridiculously fast off the line. Sounds like the Gatorade/water combo worked well for you so I'll do that and forgo the powergels.

Have you ever used the powergels? I've only used them once (at that trail race) and they were difficult to eat while running and my reflex was to spit the stuff out. I'd be better off with sports beans personally (if nutrition is required at all).

When I ran my marathon earlier this month I made a snap decision mid-race to use gels (not a good idea, I know). The guy I was running with was using them and I freaked out, thinking that Gatorade alone would not be enough carbs (I trained using only Gatorade).

I took in one around 12 miles and another around 22 miles. I didn't have trouble running while eating them (you just have to time your breathing and swallowing so you don't choke ) and they didn't upset my stomach at all. However, I wish I had water to wash them down with, and most of the water stations were another mile down the road, so I was coughing a bit right afterwords.

My understanding is that you need some type of nutrition for marathons since you will blow through your glycogen supply in 2 hours. For half marathons, a mix of Gatorade and water should be fine.

From personal experience, for anything 12k (7mi) or less, if you're well-hydrated you don't need any nutrition or water during the race at all.

I have never heard of sports beans - I'll have to check those out.

I've read pretty much the same thing, it's nice to see some real life corroboration. And sports beans are jelly belly jelly beans with electrolytes. I used them in TX as I sweat so bad and I lose lots of salt, but in NY I haven't needed them yet.

18 miles for me today. Perfect day for a run: mid-50s, light rain, light breeze. Thought I was going to be tired since I flew down to El Paso for the weekend and spend all yesterday on planes or in airports, but I felt great! 4009

Easy 3.5 miles tonight

4012

In regards to gels, I've been using gels for a while and can suck one down pretty quickly. For the half-marathon, I did have one at the 9 mile water station. I usually drink water with them but I've been taking them for so long, I don't need to.

For the marathon, I had a couple. I think around mile 10 and 18(where ever they were offering them).

I haven't tried the beans but they seem to getting popular. There are also gummy blocks and though they are tasty, I find them difficult to eat/chew while running.

I only had time for 5 today. And it was on the road. 5 on the road hurts me more than 10 on a trail. Is it the shoes?

Roads shouldn't feel harder than trails really, unless you absolutely never run on the roads. Especially if you only did 5 miles. If there were significant downhills, that might give you a bit of a pounding.

Really though, as long as you stay off the sidewalks, it shouldn't be a problem. Do you have any nagging injuries or are your shoes worn out?

The shoes I wore yesterday (NB 570) may be worn out. I didn't use to have this much pain while running on the road, I was able to run 14 miles with no problem a few months ago.

The Mizuno Wave Ascend 4s I got this past weekend are supposed to be good on the trails and decent on the roads, I'll try them next time I run on the road and see if it makes a difference. They sure felt good on the trails last weekend...

As far as nagging injuries, the only one I had was a strained hip flexor, but that has sorted itself out. Now the instep of my left foot is uncomfortable while running, but it's not debilitating in any way. As a matter of fact, my instep hurt worse in my NB 570s yesterday than they did in the new Mizunos. I think I need to retire both pairs of NB shoes I have from running duty.
