And Inflatable, very good job! I want to get a little bit by bit piece up on there like you did since I had a pretty exciting race and would like to flesh it out, but I'm like completely out of it right now and about to pass out.

As for the age group... yeah apparently I won the Master's Division My dad and I talked to some people after I was awarded first place... returned the plaque, and hopefully they'll make the appropriate fixes. I'll send an email out to them tomorrow to make sure they're taking care of it.

I'll update with how my race progressed tomorrow while I'm at work

PS... diggin the pron, looking strong!

I concur, congrats to everyone here as well!

Everything came together perfectly today. Would have been nice to be closer to 2:45, but I think I need more mileage next time around to make that happen. Considering I could barely run back in January, I'm happy to have battled to make it here.

Despite walking around for a while this afternoon and using the Stick, I can barely walk down a set of stairs. LOL. Worth it though.

Wow, nice job dood! Congrats! I'm envious of those who can run that fast for that long. Keep off those stairs! Big question is, what did you eat/drink after?

Thanks man. I was not super hungry immediately afterwords since I'd taken in gels, and lots of fluids during the race. I drank a lot more water and Gatorade and ate some mini bagels, a banana, apple, mini carrots and tapioca. Basically all of the free food they gave out haha. Then I had a coffee.

Once I got home from the race, I had eggs and another bagel and some tomato slices. Napped for a couple hours and then had steak, baked potato, salad and asparagus for dinner at my parent's place . I was constantly drinking fluids post race up until an hour before bed but I was still dehydrated - yikes.

Was it a little hot/humid? BTW, you look nothing like I thought you would! Not that I had a depiction prior though, b/c that would be flat out kind of gay.

 Main question is, do I look hotter/sexier than you thought I would? Oh wait, that's definitely gay haha n/m .

Nope, it was 50F. Only moderate humidity, but not warm enough to make a difference. My singlet is sticking to me because I only managed to down about half of the Gatorade/water at each of the stations - I'm wearing the other half.

did a nice easy 9 miles today on some FLAT trails Felt surprisingly good, considering my knees were a bit sore at work all day. Debated going for 11 but I figured I would allow my legs at least a semblance of recovery today. 3141

All righty. I'm at work and I'm idling so I figure I'll give a little breakdown on my marathon.

Got out to the line at about 20 minutes before the race was scheduled to start. Did some strides, and then got that feeling in my stomach that I ALWAYS get before a race, even if I thought everything was out of my system. Luckily got in and out of the port-a-pott with time to spare.

I was with my dad and he wanted me to get somewhat close to the front of the pack. Got in and got going about 1/4 from the front, which was good as I had plenty of targets to focus on and wasn't completely behind everyone.

My intent throughout training was to take the first half easy, and pick it up on the second half. This was partly due to the fact the Pig has a 300ft climb over miles 6-9. I didn't want to be sucking wind after that.

First mile was a 6:45, right where I wanted to be. I met a kid on the course who said he was doing the half and wanted to average 6:30s, so I decided to run with him for a bit. Felt super comfortable and my legs were waking up and feeling completely fresh. Showed in my second mile as I clocked in at 6:20.

Things settled down and I started hitting mid 6:30s throughout the climb. Right after the peak I met two guys who said that they were doing the whole marathon and were aiming for 6:30s. I was feeling good but still had 4 miles before I wanted to start pushing hard.

Right then, a young kid with a red hat on passes us moving at what looked to be 6:00 minute pace. One of the guys I was with mentioned that the kid was a local runner. I asked the guys if they wanted to go with him, they laughed, and said "No thanks".

As the guy in the red hat was putting more distance in between us and we hit the 11th mile marker I decided to leave my two new friends and make sure the guy in the hat didn't get out of my sight. Picked it up and the course started going downhill for a bit. I hit a mile (don't know which ATM, don't have my watch with me) at 5:36!! Strangely enough, I didn't gain much at all on the guy with the hat, but this probably was the fastest part of the course.

Kept with my plan with keeping the kid in my sights. He would pass people and eventually I would pass the same. Wasn't seeming like I was gaining on him, but I was feeling super strong. It always helps to be able to pass people, as it's a HUGE morale booster. Also, having fans on the side cheering and making noise was a great motivator.

At about the 18th mile, it was clear I was gaining on my target. I kept on chugging and eventually caught up with him and passed him. He looked like he hit his wall; he wasn't dying but his cadence was less consistent than it was when he passed me 9 miles earlier.

Got past him, and saw one more person in front of me, a kid with green shorts. He was quite a ways ahead, but I slowly snuck up on him and overtook him on the 23rd mile. After this though, the portion of the course was BARE and I had no one in front of me to shoot for. I hit a wall on miles 24 and 25; they were my slowest two miles besides my first mile, despite being a slight downhill. I actually started having thoughts to slow down and survival jog it, but thankfully those thoughts were fleeting

On the last mile I people started to line the course again. I asked a bystander "how far is the guy behind me?" he replied "about 100 yards"... I was feeling good and started to pick it up a little back to the pace I was doing before 24 and 25.

With about a quarter mile to go a spectator was like "there's a guy about 20 meters behind you and he's coming on strong!" I was like WTF?!

After about 10 seconds I hear the guy behind me and I started to dig deep for my kick. Right before I take off I turn to see how far behind he is. 5 meters max. I look at his number. Right as I comprehend the situationg he's like "I'm on a relay, dude!" and I just replied "Let's do it!!" and we took off for the last 200 meters or so Amazing atmosphere with all the bystanders cheering for the finishers.

Cross the finish line with a huge runner's high and got a rubdown, talked with people (green shorts guy, really nice kid) and ate bananas and bagels. To be honest I'm still taking it all in.

However, my legs are trashed! So sore, but as Inflatable mentioned, totally worth it! I'll resume training, might do a half marathon this summer, but nothing longer than that until Boston I think. We'll see

And thank you all for the congrats!

My son Adam and I ran our first trail race ever on Sunday, May 03. It was the Medved Madness Trail Run. You could sign up for either the solo race and do 15 miles or the team relay and do one of three 5 mile legs. We opted to do the 15 mile solo race of course.

We arrived at the Hopkins Point Lodge at Mendon Ponds Park in Honeoye Falls, NY at 6:30am. It was cool but not cold, the sky was clear, and there was a slight breeze. All in all perfect weather for a race. When we signed in and received our packets we were met with our first surprise of the day. Our bib numbers were identical to our bib numbers the previous week at another race. I was 10 and Adam was 11. This was definitely a good sign, SWScorch would later say that it was ?providential?. Speaking of SWScorch, we met up with him and his lovely GF at about 7:30am and chatted for a few minutes before having to make last minute trips to the bathroom and whatnot.

The race commenced at 8:07am, Adam and I had a good start. The diclofenac potassium my doctor prescribed earlier in the week had done it's job as my leg didn't hurt at the start and wouldn't bother me at all during the entire 15 miles. I'm not sure how many of us solo racers there were at the starting line, but the pack thinned out much more quickly than it did at the 5K last week. We were in the middle at the start and kept our positions for the entire race.

Leg 1 was the wettest and muddiest of the three. I would say that at least half of the leg was a mudbog or swamp. There were some hills and natural obstacles (like fallen trees, large branches, bushes, roots, potholes) and at the very end we had to run through water. It was nice to wash the mud off, but the shoes were not destined to stay clean.

Leg 2 was dry and hilly. Overall I would say that it was the easiest to navigate, except I almost tripped right at the apex of the largest hill of the leg. My son said he almost shit, but I pulled it out. Those runners that we managed to pass were passed on this leg. One item of note, leg 2 followed a horse trail in part so there were piles of horseshit to dodge. hehe

Leg 3 was the most eventful of them all. The mud came back, but since I was tiring I wasn't able to juke and jive the way I did in leg 1 so I ran through more mud. I also managed to trip and cut my shin open. I didn't notice the cut for a few miles, I guess the mud numbed it. Fortunately for my ego, no one but my son saw me fall. Leg 3 was almost too much for Adam, he struggled to keep up and I had to almost stop several times. On one such occasion the people in front of me got so far ahead that they were out of sight and earshot. The trail markers were also more sparsely placed. As a result, we took a wrong turn and lost 5 or so minutes.

The grand finale of leg 3 was at about 14.5 miles ? the last hill. It was very steep and would have been a challenge to navigate quickly while fresh. Trying to do it quickly while dead tired was difficult to say the least, and it was almost too much for Adam. He fell 2 minutes behind trying to get up the hill. And then there was the finish line ? turning the final corner brought it into view. I was able to sprint the last couple hundred of yards and finished feeling strong. Adam turned the corner and the look of pain on his face vanished instantly. He was neck and neck with another kid and actually had the kick left in him to finish in front of him. I was really proud of him. I finished number 44 and Adam was number 47. Only 69 runners finished...

Post race was relaxed and the feeling of community was amazing. And lunch was great. We were fed the usual post race recovery items (water, fruit, carbs galore) and then the catered items were brought out. Rotisserie chicken, rigatoni, potatoes, macaroni salad, tossed salad, rolls. Adam and I both piled our plates high, but neither of us could finish it all. I came close though. After lunch at the awards ceremony we were greeted with our second surprise, Adam was second in his age group and received an award as a result!

All in all it was a freaking great day and I can't wait for next year's event. If the Rochester, NY area is within striking distance for you, I highly recommend this race.

Great race reports guys! I'll write-up a better report when I get my brain back into working order.

I should sign-up for some trail races. They are much more fun than road races.

Late last night, I didn't think I'd be able to go to work as the IT band on my left knee hurt so much I couldn't bend it. But this morning other than some quad soreness, the rest of my soreness is pretty much gone. Felt like doing an easy 4 miles today but have decided to take a couple of days off.

Crazy me signed-up for a Half-marathon in a couple of weeks. Need to start getting ready for that.

Mega - Congrats again to you and Adam. That sounds like a tough race but a unique running challenge. I still fondly remember running my first two 10k road races with my Dad back in 97 and 98. It was a great bonding experience. He's still a fit guy, but struggles to run consistently. So he took pics at my race and he and my Mom cheered me on.

allies - Great post. It sounds like you ran a very smart race, saving yourself for the second half and not giving up too much after hitting the wall. I need to start more conservatively next time. Great strategy reeling in the kid in the red hat - I found myself looking ahead for people to latch onto to make it through.

Caveman - Looking forward to your report. Hope you're giving yourself enough recovery before that half-marathon.

Thanks. That race was the most exciting thing I've done in decades. And training and racing with my son has been very fulfilling. We never really got along in the past, now we're inseparable. We'll talk about this stuff when we're old men.

Super weak 7 this morning. B/T the 90% humidity and eating like crap last night, was not the best run.

Thanks Scorch, but it hurt - the road is definitely more difficult to run on. I believe I need some new daily running shoes. I think I'm going to pay a visit to a small specialty store in Victor that caters to triathletes. The owner does a gait analysis and custom fits sneakers.

Also, I'm back in weight loss mode and my energy levels are sagging a bit. I'd like to lose 10 pounds by June 15 and 25 pounds by Dec. 31 - hopefully it doesn't affect the races I'm planning on competing in.

Yep, that's the store. One of my coworkers children compete in sprint triathlons and he recommended the store to me.
