Hey allies, sorry about your troubles. Even with a 25-minute walk you're faster than my marathon PR though!

What do you think caused the whole wooziness thing? Pushing too hard in the beginning?

I think the heat was a big factor - all of my pace runs that were 8 miles or over and my long runs that were 16 miles or over were run when it was 65 and clear conditions... 75 or so and muggy was murderous. The conditions, and not adequately adjusting for them, are probably the cause behind my wooziness.

@Mega - I don't think I'll have anything over a half for sometime, might run a half in Alaska with my roommate this summer (would be sweeet!) and then Boston will probably be my next full marathon.

Mega - congrats on a solid race.

Allies - sorry to hear it didn't go well for you. What happened? You were cruising along so well!

Okay - my race report below.

I ran the Vancouver Marathon this morning. Conditions were rainy with a slight breeze, and 8 C (46F). Not so nice.

Started off pretty relaxed and was clicking off sub-6 minute miles easily. Cruised through 5 miles in 29:48, 10k in 36:58 and 10 miles in 59:44. Ran with a taller guy for a little while but realized he was going a faster pace so I let him go.

I slowed a bit coming into Stanley Park but still managed to hit the half in 1:19:50. I was taking in gel and Gatorade and feeling good.

Then my tendinitis (tib posterior) started to really act up around 25k. I was getting compensation issues too - my right quad and hamstring were tightening up too much, and my calf was cramping intermittently. I kept pushing down through about 28k but then I realized it wasn't getting better, so backed off the pace for a bit.

By 30k I was probably limping a bit. The last 12k were downright ugly. My tendon was so seized up I couldn't run faster than about 5:00/km and I was being passed by tons of people. I jogged the rest of the way as I simply couldn't put more weight on the foot by trying to go faster.

Finished in a disappointing 3:01.

So I gambled and it didn't quite pay off. I'm now going to be taking time off as planned to rehab the tendon, and I probably won't be running for 4-6 weeks, which sucks ass. Such is the sport of marathoning haha.

36k this week. I think I'm fully back in the swing of things, and in good timing too as my next race is a 1/2 marathon at the end of May. I had been considering upgrading to the full marathon, but I'm not ready for it yet. Maybe in the fall if the summer goes well...

Edit: Oh, and this week I passed 500k on the year and last week I passed 1000k since I started counting last September. Not super impressive perhaps, but big milekilometrestones for me

Ugh, bad day for ATHF runners in general it seems

On the plus side, that looks like a nice route. I was in Vancouver 2 years ago and did a couple of runs around the perimeter of Stanley Park, which was nice but I guess the path is too small to fit a full marathon.

Interesting about it finishing near GM Place. My last race actually finished inside a hockey arena (Copps in Hamilton), which was brilliant because there was no shortage of spectator space, there was a good PA, it was nice shelter from the crappy weather, there was more than adequate washroom space and it was really easy to arrange a spot to meet afterward (just pick a section number). I guess at the time the marathon was booked though, there was a possibility that the Canucks would be needing it the same day.

It's a pretty good route, yea. Goes along False Creek, Chinatown/Downtown Eastside, Stanley Park, and through Kits and back. Apart from the Burrard St. bridge, no major hills. Decently scenic.

They had a big outdoor tent this year for the expo, which was good. I got free coffee and Powerbars inside, but there was a lack of real food like they had last year (fruit, bagels, etc.). I suppose they could have used BC Place Stadium, since it's pretty close (and they use it for the Sun Run, which has 60,000 participants vs. 14,000 for this race), but perhaps they had another event there today.

I have to say though, the Royal Victoria Marathon is leagues ahead of Vancouver in running a better-organized event, and the field is stronger too.

Yea, not a great day for us, although it sounds like Mega had a good one.

Haha, LOL @ "kilometrestones" . I like that.

OK - go out and give us a good one in your 1/2 marathon so we have something to celebrate!

Yeah horrible weather today. Too bad considering the other day was so lovely.

I sure would have preferred much less humidity and about a temp. around 50. I think I could have run even faster, but you take what you can get.

Congrats on the race, Mega! Sorry I wasn't there to cheer you on; the day before was Ashlie's birthday and we were out a bit late so neither of us felt like waking up at all early. Sorry to hear your daughter didn't feel so good, but props to her for trying, and congratulations to you and both your sons! That's awesome!!

allies, sorry to hear your race didn't go so well. Sounds like you definitely gave it your all, and sometimes, that's all you can say. Good job on still running a time that most people only dream of despite the setbacks. Rest up and hopefully conditions will be better next time.

I've done 4 + 6 + 10 + 6 since I last posted.

Thanks Scorch. What's the next race for you? Adam and I are doing the Sehgahunda Trail Marathon out at Letchworth. Heard of it? Interested?

16 since I last posted.

I just noticed I passed the 200 mile mark since I started keeping track on Feb 26. Course none of this is quite yet at a running pace.

Yeah man, we're getting all sorts of people coming into the store to register for that. I am very interested, actually! ... in spectating. There is no way I am running anything over 16 miles in the next 18 months. Especially not a marathon on what I've been told are some very difficult trails with all sorts of elevation changes! However, Ashlie and I are trying to see if we can camp down there that weekend, so if we are out there, we might go cheer for you and Adam!

6 yesterday. Wanted 8 plus striders today but it was over 80 degrees and I don't handle heat well at all. I felt like 10 pounds of steaming crap in a 5 pound bag the instant I walked out the door. Barely able to plod along for 7 miles about 30 seconds per mile slower than I usually do. Blargh.

It would be cool to see you and Ashlie there. But just so you know, we're going to be running that marathon like we will the Finger Lakes 50s. i.e. not fast like you, IB, and allies.... But it's going to be an assload of fun.

25K race tomorrow morning! I'm pumped... I hope my knee and hip will hold up though; they've been bothering me lately.
