9 miles on the trails. I did "meet" another runner, this one on 4 legs. A really cool dog that looked like a pitbull/boxer/hound mix with a running backpack on ran up to me and demanded I say hi. He then ran with me for about half a mile before he peeled off to rejoin his person. Neato.

6.5, 8.5 and 6.5 since I last posted. I rounded down a few runs earlier, so I will round up this time to 22.

Woot, another Riverbank Run hits the dust!

The Riverbank Run is the biggest 25K in the US (so probably, maybe in the world)? It's a road race, Megatomic, though most of it is on some nice (paved) trails along the river. Imagine that!

The race was great though; I felt good the whole way, legs held up, and came out strong at the end. Afterward though my knee and hip decided they'd had enough and now I can barely hobble around!

To quote the newspaper:

"GRAND RAPIDS -- It was 39 degrees -- 29 with the wind chill -- when the record field of 6,562 runners left the starting line for the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K on Saturday morning downtown.

The wind was howling out of the west at 20 mph, with gusts reaching 26 mph, and was accompanied by a spitting rain from dark clouds."

So it was nice weather to run! The rain actually held off during the whole race and most of the trail was sheltered from the wind, so it was perfect running weather.

Sounds like a great time Bob and congrats on finishing. My race last weekend was 15 miles (about 25k right?), but due to the obstacles and hills it felt a lot longer.

What's next on your racing agenda?

30 for me this week. I don't think I'll be in tip top shape for my half marathon in 3 weeks, but I'm going to try to get it under 2 hours.

Thanks Mega; next on my agenda is probably to stop. I like to listen to my body and my knees and hip tell me I need to stop. I don't care about pain but I really don't want to damage myself permanently... I've been hobbling around like an old man all day and that's with ice and 5 aspirins yesterday plus more aspirin today.

I was hoping to do a trail marathon August 1st but there's no way I can get the miles in if I can't even do 15.5 without tanking for a week or two.

Well, there's no doubt that that's the smart way to do it. The only questions I would ask is are you warming up, cooling down, and stretching properly? Aches, pains, and general lethargy are fairly routine but you should be able to recover within a few days.

It's funny you mention a trail marathon as the next item you were considering as that is the very next race my boy and I are doing. It's going to be a ball buster with tons of elevation change, water crossings, roots, rocks, etc... And it's an inaugural event to boot.

There's a trail beside work I can use. It's very nice. I wish I had a trail by my house. Closest thing is a path by the canal but it's as boring as anything in the world to run on.

Congrats on the race bob. I'd like to second Mega's recommendation to stretch thoroughly after your runs.

Also, if you have insurance coverage for it, consider seeing a physiotherapist - they might be able to pinpoint an imbalance or tightness that is causing your pain and show you some exercises and stretches you can use to prevent it from recurring.

Also, I'm now five years in on a running injury due to training too hard (for my body at the time) for a marathon. HIGHLY recommend cutting back all running or racing plans if you have any injuries that are not just fleeting. Some go away themselves and some don't. Those that don't will get worse and can become chronic. Pain from climbing a hill and your heart rate is maxed out and you want to die and you keep pushing is good pain but if your knees keep complaining that is bad pain.

My local trail is pretty tame (i.e. boring) but it's on dirt, there are no cars, the trees and flowers smell amazing in the spring/summer (lilac!!!), and I bump into other runners frequently. There is a great trail half an hour from where I live, I save that for my technical trail training runs.

No running for me today. I got 2 hours of sleep last night before I got called in to help troubleshoot what tripped our off. I didn't get home until after 12pm today. I did get a nap but I'm wrecked. Maybe tomorrow.
