I've missed logging a significant number of miles this year in my hit or miss return to running, so I'll start with what I've done over the past two months in a slow build-up back: +104 through today.

Congratulations on the new PR! You'll be breaking 2:00 in no time!

I think if it wasn't a 16 mile training I probably could have broken 2 hours. My goal for the run was to hold 9:30 pace as far as I could which ended up being the entire run essentially...but if it was just a half marathon run I probably could have pushed myself to break 2 hours. I'm sure the opportunity will present itself soon enough.

A sub 2 is under a 9:07, so you have it in you to do a sub 2. I guess the question (without sounding like I'm criticizing or questioning you) is what are your bigger goals? A 9:30 long run means you're shooting for at least a 8:30 (or faster) race pace for what I am assuming is a marathon you are training for. (Which means you'd be capable of well under sub-2) You should keep your long run an easy conversational pace.

No worries on the questions. Background on me is I started running again in January after not running since I was 15(basically 13 years ago) so really I'm just now starting to really see an increase in speed and endurance. 9:30 is pretty much my easy default training speed, I can do 5 miles at that pace hold a conversation and feel fine day in day out.

Yesterday was in a sense a discovery day that "Hey I can hold this speed and feel ok over long distances" and I do feel pretty great today just some mild aches but that's it. I'm training for a 50K trail ultramarathon in January and I have no specific time goal in mind, instead just run smart, run strong and finish. Truthfully, I dont know what I'm fully capable of yet but believe me I can't wait to find out.

Gotcha. I have no doubt then that you could probably do at least a sub 1:50 half. Go bigger on your goals With that in mind, it might be something you sign up for a half in Nov and see how you do - it'll be a good baseline as to what pace(s) you should be running for tempo/hills/long/so on and so forth. Having that baseline will help. Great job on your progress so far btw

Thanks and thanks for the advice.

This week coming up will be a speed training week ending with a halloween themed 5K for fun and time.

I'm trying to find a decent November race but many are either too far from me or just not available cuz its November in Michigan. Plus I'm helping launch a new electronic medical record system in November so I'm hoping I can squeeze something in.

5 miles on the treadmill tonight. Nursing a sore knee, might be time for a rest.

Good luck this morning Mursilis.

Thanks. Got back to Virginia late last night. I was pretty wiped out from the weekend - not so much the running, but the lack of sleep! Feeling much better today.

It was great to meet you and your wife Friday, Mega. The Disney 10-mile race didn't start until 10PM eek:!), and we stayed until the close of the after-party at Disney Studios until 4AM eek:!), so I am a sleep-deprived individual! I didn't want to deviate from my marathon training plan, and I knew I'd be running my brother-in-law's pace for the race, so I also did a 10 mile training run Sat. morning and then the race at night, making it a 20 mile day! Still, we were over 2:00:00 for the 10-miler, so the pace was no problem. The overall female winner was from my neighborhood, which was cool. I didn't even know she was coming down for this race. Small world.

I also got a call from my son on Sat. with the results of his cross country meet in NC. He broke 20:00 for the first time in the 5K, and was super-excited about that, so it was a great weekend all around.

Congratulations, and that award is so hilarious! Runners have such a great sense of humor - must be the lack of oxygen to the brain!

+10 Sat. morning
+10 Sat. night/Sun. morning

It was good to meet you and your B-I-L also, maybe we can do that again sometime. And I'm happy to see you had an overall good time down here last weekend. It's easy to stay entertained in Central Florida all year long.

Central Florida is a cool spot for races and all, but between the heat and your stories of encountering rattlesnakes, gators, and all sorts of other critters out on your trail runs, I'm going to stay in Va. for a while longer! When that humidity gets to be too much, come on up and do the JFK 50 sometime. Maybe I'll be motivated enough to join you one of these years.

+10K hills and mixed trail speed work. Weather was windy and 52F. Had a 10mph tail wind the whole way. Knocked 2 minutes off my best 10k time. Now down to 54:41. I didn't even feel that winded(pun intended) at the end
