what could be the problem behind a permanent 100% CPU usage on WinXP Pro PC
it is going annoyingly slow.
shut down all the processes i could think of, that could cause system slow down, noting changed.
the PC im on is Compaq Evo D310 Minin tower, P4, 128 MB ram,
2 Ghz CPU.

am missing something here?????

Not sure if you actually used Task Manager or just shut down all the programs in your system tray.

Hit Control-Escape and the Task Manager should come up. On the Processes tab you can see exactly which process is taking up all the CPU time. (Note that the System Idle Process should have 99% of it most of the time.)

What are you using that shows it at 100%?

I had the same problem with a customers computer. It was the HP office jet driver. I uninstalled the driver for fax etc, and only installed the print driver and it worked fine. That if you have one of those. If not drivers are listed under system so look into that.

'ctrl-alt-del' brings up your task manager...

You have to designate what is using all of your resources, by examining your Processes in you Task Manager...
Look into that, then post your findings, then we'll be able to help you

Dangit. I keep forgetting all the different permutations of WinXP's keyboard shortcuts; control-alt-delete brings up the Windows Security dialog in Classic mode but Task Manager in XP-interface mode. (What's funny is Windows Help only says to use it with the link on the start meny's right-click menu.)

The bolded combination is the problem.

Here is the solution

Also, being as it is a compaq, there are probably about 10 extra services running for you to kill either through computer management or the services control panel.

dEVÝCES (cd - rom / hARD dÝSK) operating in PIO mode may be responsible, check out Primary and Secondary IDE driver controls in System settings

At work we had a customers machine that the hard drive was always running and it ended up being a problem with kazaa. Uninstalled it and the problem was gone.

It's a Compaq with 128MB running WinXP.
Probably 32M of that 128MB is going to AGP aperture
8-16M is going to the display and various offscreen buffers for the "Intel Extreme" graphics (I'm guessing there is no video card, even if it has one the 2 choices are crappy and crappier (both GF2 MX based)).
Another 64M or so is no doubt going to DirectCD, Compaq internet shortcuts service (for the extra keyboard keys), silly system tray progs for network card & audio config, & other compaq management crap installed by default.

This leaves about 16M for WinXP. OF COURSE ITS THRASHING WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY SWAPPING 100% OF THE TIME.

Also, if you terminal services/remote desktop into the box and log in locally at the same time, with the default installation of DirectCD, the 2 instances of it will conflict with each other and one of them ends up in an endless loop.

Actually it brings up the Windows Security screen with the options for Locking the computer, shutting down, changing password, et cetera, in 2k and NT, and in XP under classic interface. In the XP-ified interface it brings up task manager only. In XP ctrl-shift-esc does bring up only task manager in classic mode, presumably it does the same in 2k and NT.
