hm seems the difference between the two is the rpms. the 100GB for 139 has an instant rebate. so it comes out to about 151? dollars or so? the maxtor comes with a mail in rebate so the tax is on the original amount, so it comes out to about 145~ or something. 20 extra gb or 1800rpms more.. ah joy. i guess the 5400 rpm could be slower, but cooler perhaps more reliable since it doesn't work as hard.. i dunno. anyone know the real performance diffreence between the drives?

Just bought the 100 GB drive for 150 incl tax, but they also gave me a $50 mail in rebate... You have to ask for it as it is not in the computer..

Works out to 100 for 100 GB

Looking at the mail in rebate in front of me:

50 rebate on WD1000BBRTL (100 GB 7200 WD) valid for purchase bewtween May 24-30th. Offer valid only at Fry's Electronics.

For some reason they are not advertizing it and it doesn't come up with a rebate receipt at the till, but if you ask for the rebate form they will give you one.

Looks good to me, sending my rebate in now.

ATA66 is fine for any current generation IDE hard drives, even the fastest WD JB "special edition" drives.

All current IDE hard drives physically max out at roughly a 50+ MB/s rate for sustained throughput (much slower in the inner tracks I believe). While having an ATA100 or ATA133 controller does mean burst transfers from the buffer cache to your controller can be faster, the real world difference is fairly minor.

The only essential requirement for ATA133 is to break the 137GB capacity barrier.

yup thanks if this really is the wd1000bb then according to storage review it only transfers at 43.7-27.9MB/sec sequential.
