10K or 7200K?

I am upgrading my PC with many new parts ranging from Video Cards to CPU's. I am changing from a simple IDE configuration to a SATA. I am looking at a WD Raptor 10,000rpm SATA. Is it worth it? Is it going to be a noticable difference from a 7200? Any questions Im forgetting?

I did it. 10K RPM must be faster the 72 RPM.

It's faster, loading applications but for most people, you can't justify the extra cost over a 7200RPM drive. The performance increase isn't too large though.

How about when playing apps like Doom3, HL2, FarCry etc? Will I see an improvment in gaming?

Loading the maps u will see a diff. But fps wise no.

The only place where a raptor helps gaming is level load times, otherwise it has no effect on gaming.

If you don't mind the cost premium, currently, the 74GB Raptor can't be beat by other PATA or SATA HDs when used as a boot drive.

The 36GB Raptors tend to be noisier, but the 74GB ones uses Fluid Dynamic Bearings, which partly contribute to its longevity (5 year warranty),

and noise level comparable to current 7200 SATA drives.

The Raptor does indeed run hotter and louder than 7200RPM drives. It $130 more than a 7200RPM drive of about the same size, which definately is too expensive, considering that you'll only see like a 3-4 second performance gain in loading times. You could invest $130 in a lot of things, all of which would improve you computer's performance more than a 10,000RPM drive.

Far overpriced. Get a good high capacity drive with large platter density and NCQ and you can get pretty close performance.

scca325is to get correct infos on various HDs, just visit storagereview.com, and access their harddrive performance database to compare various HDs, covering their real-life performance, noise-level and operating temperature, etc.

Agreed... Too expensive.. get 2xHitachi 80gig (or 2x160gig) Sata300 NCQ drives. I've seen raid0 perfomanace equaling or besting raptors. Actually it may best the raptor at three drives, that is 3x80 vs 3x80 raid0

yah for about 130 more you can get the microsoft's new x64 os if you have a 64 bit cpu...those increase gaming performance a lot...of course it doesn't have much native support for a lot of things yet..

The 10k spins at 10,000 RPM. The 7.2k spins at 7,200 RPM. The size of your genitalia will remain the same, regardless.

Actually I've seen reviews of the 64bit XP. No performance difference at all with 32 bit apps, and 64bit apps, including the 64bit version of .....FarCry I think it was....might be wrong on the game, but it was a 64bit version of a game specifically designed to use with XP64.....but it actually ran SLOWER than XP-professional SP2. Don't be worrying about 64bit right now.

I run two in Raid 0 and really wouldn't buy anymore just because the difference isn't astronomical like some people say. Not worth the extra cost in my opinion.
