(original title - Holy crap, my monitor does 200Hz refresh (Edit - And will probably explode if I keep it there))

I was just tweaking around with my display settings in R3D Tweak, and I got to checking out the "Refresh Rate" tab. Lo and behold, 200Hz. Why not, let's try it. *click*.

WOW. So much easier on the eyes, it's absurd. My old Ti4200 would only do up to 85Hz at 1024x768 for some reason, and now my R9000 is doing more than twice that.

Yeah, it was lying. Okay, so it says 100Hz on the OSD. The rates above there certainly look distinct though.

What monitor do you have? I have a ATI AIW 8500DV and a Sony CPD-G400 19" that is at 1200x1024 @ 90Hz...............

So does 200Hz really make that much difference over, say 100Hz? One would think that if it's not flickering, it's not flickering..

The monitor is actually the limiting factor, in terms of refresh rate, not the vid card. Also, I think your system may be lying to you. Most monitors are lucky to get past 110Hz at ANY resolution. Using a third party program to tweak the refresh rate higher than it was designed to go can seriously shorten the lifespan of the monitor (speaking from experience).

Assuming that your monitor is actually running at 200Hz, you probably are doing quite a bit of damage to it right now. Check and see what your max refresh is spec-ed at, and try not to exceed it. Or, if you are going to, at least not by 80Hz.

your eyes can only see soo much per second, and if your screen isnt redrawn at that speed it doesnt make a difference.

are you just going by what windows says?

use the actual controls on the monitor and check what it says the hz rate is at :0...if it's 200...wow I'm impressed : P

but I could set my monitor to 100 in windows thing...it would be at 100, but when i checked through monitors tools it was still at 85.

you must be in like 100x100 resolution : )

This *was* in display properties. WinXP happily informed me that up to 200Hz was available. The monitor's OSD tells me it's 100, but I can see the differences once I go past that.

Mookow - I just bumped it back to 100Hz. Not flickering, but it sure doesn't look the same as 200.

Holy crap, my monitor does 200Hz refresh!

But not for long...

Seriously, its not quite as dumb as booting a Duron 950 w/o a HSF (I saw the aftermath of that), but unless you monitor is spec-ed for it or something close to it (which I highly, highly doubt unless you are running 320x240 or something), you arent helping your monitor's lifespan... except to contract it

Hmm. After reinstalling the display drivers, I'm not getting 100Hz as an option anymore. I do get 120Hz though. /shrugs

Either way, I was starting to notice flicker at 85.

And you trust Bill Gates to successfully manage your hardware... why?

EDIT: You trust MS over common sense... lets think about that for a sec...

"That vulnerability is purely theoretical" - L0phtcrack always seemed to work for me.

So not only is windows lying to you, you're lying to yourself...nice.

My monitor is set at 120Hz at 1024x768 and the OSD concures.

Okay, now XP won't give me anything above 85, but the monitor's OSD happily confirms up to a 100Hz rate.

I doubt it would be all you're hoping for.

I could pack an old 14" 800x600 Radiation King full of M-80s though.

I don't know an awful lot about refresh rates. Hmm, mine only goes up to 72 Mhz (@ 1600 x 1200). Is there any way to improve this? I was under the impression I had a fairly decent monitor (Sony HMD-A420 19").

I could untick the box that says show supported modes only, but I don't wanna blow it up

Monitor video amplifiers don't care what refresh rate you run. You can run 220 Hz refresh rate at 640x480 on a lot of monitors. Refresh rate decreases as resolution goes up because more bandwidth is needed. Most high end displays max out around 300 MHz.

I wouldn't recommend anything over 85Hz. In the unusual event that you can still perceive flicker (possible depending on your lighting, phosphor persistence, and your eyes!) then 100Hz should be used. Going higher puts more demands on the graphic card's RAMDAC, your cables and the monitor's pixel clock. (video amp) This often results in graphic anomalies such as ghosts, blurry or fuzzy text, etc. The sharpest text will always be witnessed at 60Hz. Of course the flicker will blind you. (unless you're running a TFT panel which then none of these things would apply to you!)

You can find a plethora of information about monitors and repairing them here.

If you would like a detailed tool to test your display, you can find a program with professional level testing right here.

Enjoy!

Too bad the phosphorence screen can't hold that much of a charge and you're slowly burning away your retinae and optic nerve. You will be blind in 3 weeks with possibility of developing a brain tumor years from now.
