$150 budget?

It has been years since I have built a comp. So much has changed and cant seem to find consistant reviews. My harddrives are failing 3 x 320 gb and need to get the info off on a new drive so I am looking at getting a 1tb-1.5tb drive. I would like it to perform well but want the best bang for my buck. Anyone seen anygood deals. Is the Hitachi deskstar 7k1000 a good choice? I have never owned a hitachi only samsung and wd, so Im a little leary. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Also, I dont have to spend all $150 I can roll over the remainder into a new motherboard/processor.

Personally, I'd stick to a WD Caviar Black. The 1TBs are a good choice.

WD Blacks are not best bang/buck. They're good, but not bang/buck.

Samsumg is probably best bang/buck.

Or if you aren't completely turned off Seagate, the 7200.12s are pretty good.

WD 1TB is a very good choice. If the cost is a bit more than you want to spend, then I'd look at Hitachi or Samsung.

As another alternative, you could get the WD 640GB drives which are just a *little* slower than the 1TB, but cheaper as well.

Seagate has had a ton of issues with their 1TB+ drives, so I'd stay away until they get sorted out.

I didn't use Hitachi HD yet, that HD doesn't have a good reviews so far.
How about WD Caviar Green, it performed well in my CPU

these high density drives seem to have alot of failures (soft and hard).

so far i've had tremendous success in non-raid with the WD green and WD black.

craptastic (7200.11) experience.

good experience with samsung (which i've had nothing but bad luck with their older drives).

samsung has a painful/strange RMA process thats far inferior to seagate.

wd is okay on rma.

seagate has the fastest rma possible but i've had to use it far too many times in life.

WD is interesting because almost always my drives have failed right after the warranty ended

for the little bit more they cost you are foolish to not get one. watch newegg they have them on sale pretty regularly. just had the 750 on sale for $64.99 few days ago

I don't think you understand what Bang For Buck means...

He also said he wanted good performance. Since the two are usually mutually exclusive, I figured recommending the best drive on the market, which still has very good bang for the buck, would be a good idea.

Dudes, the RE3 is better than the Black, and RE3 are not in the bang-for-the-buck range. Hence, Blacks could be considered for their bang-for-the-buck. Hitachi rocks for bang-for-buck. I'm still weary of Samsung after experience with their old drives and their (F1 DT & RAID) performance is ABSOLUTELY terrible with multi-threaded reads.

EDIT: I forgot to clarify that the 7K1000.B fix some issues that the 7K1000 had being the first 1TB drives on the market. They are 3 platters rather than 5. In the OP you did not say .B, so ........
