queens is pretty expensive... it'll be hard to look for apt.. further away from the subway, the quieter, and cheaper.. closer to subway is very expensive..

Kew & forest hills are great.. Austin st has all the food.. its semi close to the subways and the street of death (queens blvd)

Astoria is a pretty nice area, but I'm not sure what the rent is like there.

If I lived in Queens, I'd have to get to the Jamaica LIRR station which is located at Sutphin Blvd. & Archer Ave. I'd like to be able to walk to it.. I haven't looked at taking public tranpsportation to the train station yet but it'd be an option if I could get a liveable monthly rent.

edit.

I also heard that it might be better to get a broker and have them look, any thoughts or contacts?

Well first off, working in Hempstead, and trying to take the LIRR near Sutphin, aren't exactly two of the safest areas. (at least late at night, they're ok enough during the day.)

As for that price, I don't know if you'll find something like that in Forest Hills. If anything, throw out some names of areas you saw that have that price range and I can give you my two cents as to how safe I believe they are.

Be aware that with brokers come fees, which can add up. They do make it easier if you are moving in from out of town.

600-800 in Kew or FH is going to be tough, they aren't that cheap.

Look in the surrounding areas like Elmhurst, Rego Park, Corona, Jackson Heights, Ozone Park etc.

It's actually known as the Boulevard of Death - named so because of all the pedestrians that have been killed (80+) trying to cross it.

It's an boulevard with 8 lanes of traffic where drivers are known to play Frogger on pedestrians.

actually, it's the other way around. Pedestrians that have gotten killed hop over the fences that were built.

maybe you should go into the Suffolk county border. Try Dix Hills or Deer Park. I know there are a lot of mother-daughter houses for rent (the daughter part) and sometimes they're pretty cheap for a nice sized place. We were thinking of buying a mother-daughter house at one point. Huge houses for the price but a tad far out there. They're around exit 51 on the LIE but if you have a car, you're set. It's about 15 miles out past Hempstead.
