1600x1024 is not a standard aspect ratio. It's close to 16:10, but not exact. And when you say things are stretched, sounds like your monitor has a 4:3 aspect ratio. So you should be able to set the resolution to 1600x1200 and fix it.
1600x1024 is a legit but rarely used oddball resolution. He could have a 1680x1050 (or 1600x1200) panel, but we don't yet know what kind of monitor he has. Sounds to me that if things are stretched vertically he has scaling set to Fill (or stretch) rather than to Aspect.
Lets just cut to the chase---if the OP has a crt monitor---any resolution setting is an option with some options working better--and somewhat limited by video card power.
If the OP has a lcd monitor---the OP is advised to run it at the lcd's native resolution.--and to hope his video card has the power needed.
With video card and on board video chip being used interchangeably---with the proviso that the bios may allow more shared memory for the on board chip.
